For most of us, the band was much improved tonight. Rick K0KEX’s station was Lurking in Smithville,MO while he was elsewhere. He later CONFIRMED the NBEMS Exercise file. Keith WA0TJT checked in from Kansas City,MO with a good signal. Both events signal improving band condx. Fall is heralding Winter. Net participation usually picks up as nights grow longer. The net ran well tonight; thanks to you. Ck-in was a breeze; by net-end, we had 29 stations in the log.

Four stations participated in the NBEMS Exercise, enough to make it interesting and useful. We really underestimated the band tonight and CONFIRMED all four stations in the first transmission in THOR-50×1. Usually, we begin the Exercise in a mode we think just possible, and Fill with modes more likely to succeed. Tonight, we CONFIRMED all stations with the first pass. When this happens, we still send the file in the other two modes to support QNX and Lurking stations working the Exercise silently. Learning the NBEMS Exercise silently is the best preparation for working it live.

Next week’s NBEMS Exercise includes a Mode Shoot-Out comparing the new OFDM mode with one of our favorites. Be sure your FLDIGI is a current version that includes OFDM.

Stations working the NBEMS Exercise silently, usually Fill or CONFIRM Exercise files in the Monitor’s Session directly after net. Tonight, we had three stations in the Monitor’s Session. This is working well. QNX and Lurking stations work the NBEMS Exercise w/o interacting with NCS and Fill or CONFIRM files in the Monitor’s Session. Keeping the main net to a reasonable length is important for everyone. We have members in three time zones.

A reminder about CALLSIGNS: Sending your CALLSIGN in CAPS is a big help to NCS. Capitalized CALLSIGNS stand out clearly in HF noise. Lower-case characters blend with the noise. All ORCA protocols indicate capitalized CALLSIGNS. A blank line before your text also helps. Little things like this assist us in minimizing net-length.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Devin KJ7OES in Grants Pass,OR. Devin is less than 100mi to our East. It’s nice to log another Oregon station. A few years ago, we were the only Oregon stations. A bit odd for an Oregon/California based net (-: We mistakenly thought James KM6MO in Bakersfield,CA was a first-time log-in, but we see he’s logged in before. It’s nice to see him on the Roster. That’s two Bakersfield stations. They both work Western Digital Net too.

Speaking of Western Digital Net, it meets every Thursday, same time/freq as ORCA. WDN’s first session every month is Newcomer’s Net, specifically focused for incoming digital Ops. Get guidance with digital networking protocols, NBEMS apps, traffic-handling strategies and tactics, etc. Steve K6ETA/NCS is knowledgeable, friendly, and supportive. Join digital colleagues on an actual Traffic net. No Traffic? No problem. Traffic is an option. Ck-in QRU(no Traffic) and participate in the Comment Round.

Check out this image and article: Solar Cycle 25 overperforms: Sunspot counts for Sept. 2021 were the highest in more than 5 years, exceeding the official forecast. Sun scientists anticipate a more rapid return from Solar Minimum.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight we’ll run a variation of the NBEMS Exercise. You’ll be working with NBEMS apps and PC apps in a one-off traffic-handling simulation. Next week’s NBEMS Exercise includes a Mode Shoot-Out. We’ll compare the new OFDM mode to one of our stalwarts. Have FLDIGI up to date, OFDM is a recent addition. We’ll send two copies of the same file, ONCE in each mode, and complete the file that needs the least Fill blocks. Be sure to REPORT the correct file by highlighting it in FLAMP.

Working this net, there’s usually no need to announce your intention to change mode(use TxID) or application. We’re learning to anticipate operational changes. Our Preamble outlines regular net operations; we’re practicing situational awareness and operational flexibility. The Preamble prepares us to configure for net operations; correctly parsing instructions is essential to implementing them. Thanks for your focus and attention. We all contribute to the learning experience, even when we make mistakes.

In Net Protocols and NBEMS Exercise instructions, CALLSIGN is printed in CAPS; CAPITAL characters are indicated. CAPITALIZED CALLSIGNS stand out nicely from HF noise.

Thanks.

Next is the NBEMS Exercise w/Mindy W7ZAP < NCS

ORCA < WA7HHE, Heart warming story: local Ham Radio Hero Saves Friend’s Life Hundreds Of Miles Away: CBS Sacramento 8/16/2021 “It was all kind of skewed and everything. I thought it was a prank call at first and so then after we finally established, he said ‘You are an amateur radio operator,’ and I said ‘Yeah’, then it all started coming together,” explained Scott. His ham radio friend, Skip Kritcher, 500 miles away in Myrtle Point, Oregon dialed Bill’s number by mistake. Scott said Kritcher was on the floor and in need of help. “I couldn’t see the numbers too good on the cell phone and I wound up pushing the button and calling Bill,” explained Kritcher.Scott’s wife Sharon, a retired nurse of nearly 60 years, quickly realized Kritcher was having a stroke.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
