Well, the band was pretty wonky before net, but settled down and we did well. Our Humboldt County Ops were busy with ARC meetings tonight, but Jaye KE6SLS manage to check-in at closing. Good thing too; he copied the exercise traffic and will make it available to other ARC members who missed the net. Still, we had ten check-ins and completed the net in an hour. Before net, I was wondering if I would have difficulty connecting the UT & ID stations, but no. We were able to complete every message in MFSK-32 with a couple fills.

All our traffic, formal and practice, provides the opportunity to develop or digital skills. It’s nice to have a mix of articles, observations, images, & QRU’s. We’ll encounter them all in emergency situations. It also helps keep the net interesting while we learn and practice.

We’re doing well with FLAMP and making use of the FETCH and RELAY features nearly every net. I hope you don’t find the FLAMP exercises too pedestrian. They emphasize the more mundane tasks of manipulating files within the OS. There’s much to digital traffic handling that’s common to many basic computer tasks. Familiarity with all aspects of digital traffic will make us competent and confident digital Operators.

If you are interested in calling a brief daytime ORCA DIGITAL NET on the weekend, please contact me. I can set you up to succeed w/o undue effort. As we’re mostly interested in learning more of daytime operating condx, the net would be brief. I would try the SATERN Int’l Digital Net format. They take check-ins and send one practice FLAMP message and only fill 5 blocks or less. They are using SATERN bulletins for practice; we would use a very short file that would require few fills. It shouldn’t take more than 20-30min. It would be good to give it a go and see if there’s enough interest to sustain it. If not, no harm done and we would be the wiser.

The band was sufficient for communications, but not so good for images:

Next week, Mindy W7ZAP will be out of town and I’ll be running solo. Not a big deal, but we’ve run the net together from the outset; four years now. I’ve come to rely on a 2nd Op tracking net activities.  If I fall a bit behind, you’ll know why. Thanks for taking time to work with us tonight. I hope to see you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA Announcements 04/oct/16

Again tonight we’ll begin an exercise in file manipulation that we

will complete next week. You will receive the exercise file in the

weekly FLAMP exercise. It’s an FLMSG-Form file you will open in FLMSG,

Edit, Save, and resend in FLAMP next week. In LInux, find FLAMP messages

from the top menu, ‘FILE/FOLDERS’, and ‘ICS/MESSAGES’. Maybe the same in

Win, I’m not sure.

Remember: You can RELAY fill BLOCKS from FLAMP’s RX tab using the

FETCH and RELAY buttons. If FLAMP does not FETCH the needed BLOCKS,

you can type them into the RELAY window. Otherwise, it will send the

complete file.

After our daytime check-in on Sept 17, a number of members have suggested

we do it regularly. A good idea, I think. I can get it started, but I’d like to

enable another Op to NCS it, if anyone is interested. Maybe a quick check-in and

a short practice file, similar to the SATERN International Digital Net (Sat 1000p,

14.064.5+1500, Olivia 5/800, Ken AD5XJ NCS). We could probably wrap in 20-30min.

:sb:59 Ransomware Virus Infects Honolulu Fire Department Computers

:mg:1161 (TNS) — Honolulu Fire Department personnel inadvertently downloaded a ransomware computer virus that infected about 20

HFD computers this week, forcing the department to temporarily shut down all its administrative computers.

HFD Capt. David Jenkins said the department was notified of the infection about 9 p.m. Monday and began shutting down its administrative

computers in the department’s 43 fire stations to prevent the virus from spreading. The computers are used for emails, reports and other

administrative duties.

The department’s emergency response was not affected — its computer-aided dispatch system and computers in firetrucks operate on a

separate network, he said.

The ransomware in this case, known as ODIN, is spread when a user clicks on an email link that takes the user to a webpage, where the

virus is downloaded, he said.
