Preamble to Postamble took only 36min tonight. The band supported most stations well, but not all. In Oakland,CA, John KS6M experienced extreme atmospheric noise again this week. Enjoy what improvement there is while you can, DST Fall-Back is just over the horizon. Incremental improvement is enabling stations to our East to ck-in. Steve WY7SJM in Casper,WY has made the last three Rosters. Maybe soon, we’ll see the KS/MO Ops too. We Logged one new station tonight, Scott KJ7NXK in Deer Park,WA.

While editing noise from the Log, we discovered two things that make the Log easier to read and easier to locate specific events. We also discovered another benefit of ORCA’s ‘TxID OFF’ Protocol. Our stations are configured to acknowledge TxID reception with a string like this:
‘Before RSID: <<2022-10-05T02:02Z MFSK-32 @ 3581000+1500>>’
These long lines stand out clearly in the log. They’re usually associated with NCS transmissions because members work w/TxID OFF except when changing Mode for Traffic or Comments. You can use these TxID notices to locate specific net events by scanning the line immediately below, ‘Before RSID:….’ Net Control’s text and the time-stamp help locate events quickly. We’ve also changed how we deal with blank lines to group net events more logically. These changes make the log easier to read and more likely to be used. Check it out.

Reading the Log will help clarify our TxID Protocol. Members work the net w/TxID OFF unless changing Mode. We use TxID to increase our situational awareness. Instead of set’n forget, we manage it moment-by-moment. We enable/disable as needed. This practice will generalize to other application features that we use discriminately.

We’re interested in your thoughts about holding off-net Macro discussions at NBEMS Forum #macros. Currently, we discuss Macros during nets and by email. Using NBEMS Forum #macros would enable more digital Ops to participate. We’re bound to encounter people that know more, or have different purpose and experience. It should be good for all and Dave W1HKJ is an NBEMS Forum Moderator. He usually chimes in when needed.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight is our last Basic NBEMS Exercise. Bruno KG7VVN will be NCS. He and Don KJ7VGV will continue conducting NBEMS Exercises on 1st Tuesdays. We’ll drop the NBEMS Exercise Qualifiers, Basic and Advanced. The after-net Monitor’s Session eliminates the need for an entry-level Exercise.

Other net events like Macro experiments, off-freq traffic-handling, image/map exercises, etc will be scheduled for 3rd, 4th & 5th Tuesdays when more members are able to participate.

Incoming stations learn the NBEMS Exercises as QNX check-ins. The Exercises are most easily mastered while working them silently. Monitoring eliminates the need to track NCS and net-flow. You can focus exclusively on learning the Exercise and check your work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. Only after mastering the NBEMS Exercise should new stations ck-in Active. When you move from working silently to participating, you need to commit a portion of your attention to net-flow.

Jaye KE6SLS recently asked Dave W1HKJ, FIDIGI Developer, to add a new feature. Dave is usually receptive to feature requests. Jaye asked him to extend FIDIGI’s ability to notify the User when specific text, like CALLSIGN, is decoded. This feature is already operational for a few digital modes, but not the modes most digital nets use like MFSK, THOR, etc.

An Audio Alert would benefit members during NBEMS Exercises. NCS occasionally calls them to Relay while they’re busy with Exercise tasks. It would also benefit those who monitor 3.581. This feature listens for specified text, it doesn’t have to be CALLSIGNS. A QSO call like, ‘CQ CQ ORCA’ would activate an audio-file Alert for the text-string, ‘ORCA’.

ORCA < WA7HHE, not a lot new at this QTH except my new Camper RV ladder came today Some might remember my checking in portable from our area mountain two weeks ago. As I was just leaving my campsite I turned on my rear view camera just in time to see a Aspen Tree pull up behind me and crash into my camper. Got out and asked
why it wasn’t driving more careful just shruged its shoulders and held up its branches. Did not have an insurance card either That’s the end of my camping story and I’m sticking to it. Moral to the story is don’t get close to the Aspen Trees.
73’s to all Brad

ORCA NCS< W6DLW, Congratulations to Bruno for a great job on the exercise tonight. I’ve not been able to participate with ORCA the last few weeks. However, it sure feels good to be back in the saddle tonight. My wife (Terry) and I spent the afternoon on a drive up what we call Cedar Canyon, UT SR14 to a little community called Duck Creek and then Navajo Lake to see the awesome color changing of the trees. The area is a little over 10,000 feet. Colors ranged from light green to yellows, different shades of orange to medium and dark reds. Fall is such a great time of year here. Nice to see everyone on the waterfall. Stay safe. 73 all. W6DLW

tn oe@daeDYntdqlnoo¨t (brief NCS dbl)Фis a good time in the desert. Lots to do before winter sets in. First batch of potatoes in the dehydrator looking good. Still have more potatoes in the ground with no storms/freezing will let them continue to grow. I hope everyone knows 3 is 2, 2 is 1, and 1 is none. Hope everyone continues to prepare for storms to fires to uncertain events on the horizon. Bruno good job and topic.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Scott KJ7NXK in Deer Park,WA. We’ll ask him to ck-in QNX for a few sessions and, if he’s interested, learn the NBEMS Exercise silently and check his work in the after-net Monitor’s Session.
We recently noticed the hashtag #macros @ the NBEMS Forum. It’s the logical forum for ongoing Macro discussion, development, questions, etc. It’s almost unused. I started the only thread @ #macros on 30/Aug/21 w/o realizing it had a #hashtag. It may be the best place for Macro exploration. Discussing Macros @ NBEMS-#macros, we’re likely to meet more Macro-savvy Ops. An even bigger advantage is having Dave W1HKJ, FLDIGI’s Developer, on board. Dave is a Forum Moderator. NBEMS Forum members can enable notification of #macros posts. < Doug K7KY
