Another adequate 80m band tonight. Not great, but good enough for digital signals. Tonight’s net was a bit smaller than usual; always a welcome event. We were wrapped in 55min. Although it seemed we lost Dave K7DV early on, he was just away from his station. Dave drives for Uber and is occasionally called to duty. He was back in good form by net-end.

Thanks to Bill K6QOG for relaying Mindy’s W7ZAP FLAMP exercise. We get lots of valuable practice beyond the simple operation of computers, software, and radios. We’re also learning effective relaying; a vital radio communications skill. These exercises help us evaluate signals and locations to determine the optimum relay station. Brad WA7HHE also helped with relay tonight. Brad has a great signal and is usually well copied by everyone. Actually, most of our regular members have good digital signals. When we’re experiencing poor copy, it’s usually due to band condx.

Remember during the weekly FLAMP exercise, NCS prompts you for a REPORT by sending your callsign only. Waiting for this prompt helps avoid doubles. Our FLAMP practice exercises are somewhat different than passing formal traffic. Formal traffic is usually sent to an Op or an Agency, not to the entire net. NCS would send the TX & RX stations off the net frequency to pass traffic. Those two stations, or three if they need relay, would TX back & forth easily between themselves w/o the order we need for a group.

Welcome to Jim KY6M in Atascadero,CA. He checked in&out tonight, but popped back in for the comment round. I hope he has time to work with us in 2017. Clifford N0LKC has checked in&out for the last two months now as he travels through ID, NM, and soon, AZ, often at 10w. Very good for 10w and a campground antenna. Clifford is on his way to Quartzsite Hamfest.

We’re dropping last-year’s ORCA plan to split the net in two when check-ins exceed 15 or so. Jaye KE6SLS was our ALT/NCS for this plan and we actually tried it once. Thanks to Jaye for his support. I was concerned the net would grow faster than I could adapt. Since then, it seems easier to better manage our traffic and comments when we have a big net. Tonight, with only five potential traffic stations, we were not pressed for time and invited the monitors in for comments. I know our regular Ops won’t mind deferring their practice traffic now and then.

The short messages generated in the weekly FLAMP exercise also help. TX times are shorter, and the traffic cycles increase. Completing more of these complex tasks during the net reduces the boring spaces between events and helps maintain focus. Emergency nets often have periods of intense activity interspersed with times of nothing-happening.

Here’s tonight’s images:

Our weekly FLMSG/FLAMP exercise, up next, will distribute’ex9.txt’,

an exercise in file manipulation and parsing/following instructions.

Remember, when sending in FLAMP, change ‘Send to’ from ‘QST’ to the

RX station CALLSIGN. In a real traffic situation, only the target

station usually needs fills.

You can return this exercise to NCS in FLAMP today, or any practice net.

As always, these exercises are optional; you can send other traffic,

images, or QRU.

Welcome to KY6M Jim and a return from N0LKC Clifford who is ‘on the road’.

I’m enjoying running the FLAMP portion of the net. Not a week goes by that I don’t make a mistake or have some event that leads me to some a-ha! moment. I enjoy learning in a relaxed environment and appreciate you all for the opportuninty to become better at digital comms :-)

Wishing everyone a safe and happy 2017! Hey! I recognize that VOA 2017 image… nice job Christine :-)

73,

Mindy W7ZAP sk
