A series of homestead issues displaced the Net Report. Wednesday morning we discovered that last week’s cold snap broke two water system fittings. We had to rebuild the supply-side manifold, a bigger task than replacing two joints. This morning, the 24vdc fridge isn’t working. Rats! The New Year is already difficult. Our 24v FLA battery bank is down to 22v. Freezer is OK w/22v, but not the fridge. That’s odd as both are similar models by same Mfg. The back-up 24vdc marine PS is topping up the bank and fridge is running again. Something is amiss and needs further troubleshooting. Doug’s station developed issues during WDN last night. More troubleshooting, but it can wait a bit. Now to the Net Report before something else breaks.

Winter band condx are making copy difficult for stations that depend on short skip while enabling distant stations. We logged one Wyoming station and two in Missouri.

Next week’s NBEMS Exercise will feature Macro creation on-the-fly; an Exercise suggested by Don KJ7VGV. Instead of creating a message file, we’ll create a Macro and send that Macro in the Traffic Round. The underlying theme in all NBEMS Exercises is parsing and implementing written instructions correctly.

TxID again: The only time net Ops have TxID active during ORCA nets is when they Relay the call for Ck-In or change mode for Traffic or Comments. Here’s an opportunity to practice situational awareness. TxID is similar to your vehicle’s horn; you use it consciously and selectively. Use TxID consciously and selectively too. TxID should be OFF except when you’re relaying the call for Ck-In or changing modes.

To make important FLDIGI features like RxID, TxID, SQL, LOCK button and line over cursor more visible, we change the Green indicators to Red. Red makes them easier check quickly.

Between the closing Postamble and Monitor’s Net Preamble, someone mistakenly sent the net Roster; the entire net Roster. Erroneous transmissions aren’t unusual. We all make mistakes now & then. It’s important to know how to recover quickly. There are two ways to terminate TX and clear the TX buffer: The keyboard ‘ESCAPE’ key and the ‘T/R'(TX/RX) button at bottom right of FLDIGI screen. Both end TX immediately and clear the TX buffer. No need for mistakes to run their course.

Thank you for emailing TESTimages for the Net Report.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise is conducted by Don KJ7VGV. We’ll again use the FLMSG ICS-213 form. EMCOMM traffic-handlers may see an up-tick in Civic Agency support and H&W traffic in 2023. ICS-213 is used by numerous Civic Agencies and Winlink.

This month we celebrate the New Year, 2023, and the 10th Anniversary of ORCA DIGITAL NET. Don will run NBEMS Exercise #290 tonight, 5.6yrs since we began numbering Exercises. We’ve also published about 5.6yrs of ORCA TESTimages. There must be a zillion TESTimages on our server. Jaye KE6SLS has been with us since we moved to HF mid January 2013. Others joined us soon after and many are still here today. Thanks so much to each and every ORCA Op. We deeply appreciate you. We’ve done well by working as a team. Many digital nets have come and gone. We’re still here and still relevant.

NBEMS Exercises frequently contain questions. They’re primary purpose is simulating traffic that you must reply to b4 sending. Occasionally the question is germane to digital traffic-handling or digital networking. When questions relate to net station, antenna, QTH, Phone#, we add that info to the ‘Notes’ window in FLDIGI Log. We use FLDIGI’s Log for Ck-In, so that info is visible for each Op we Log. Keeping ORCA member antenna info in Notes helps us choose Relay stations. Knowing the senders Antenna & Power helps evaluate condx and path. Over time, we develop an internal database of member station characteristics. You may find it useful to keep info like this in Log/Notes too.

Once again, if you’re relatively new to ORCA operations, here’s a couple important points. Over time, the NBEMS Exercise has become more comprehensive and challenging. Exercises simulate a busy emergency net where time can be critical. Exercises include a little time pressure. You must divide your attention between Exercise tasks and tracking NCS and net-flow. If you focus exclusively on the Exercise, you’ll miss NCS calling and delay the Exercise. Learn the Exercises well while Monitoring, then work them live.

The Monitor’s Session is only 2yrs old. Previously, there was no format for Monitor’s to FILL or REPORT Exercise files they completed silently. Now, it’s easy to Ck-In QNX and work the Exercise silently, FILLING missed blocks, or CONFIRMING the file in the after-net Monitor’s Session. Take advantage of the Monitor’s Session and get a solid grasp on the Exercise before participating live. It takes practice to complete Exercise tasks AND track your place in net-flow. Reporting Fill blocks needed and/or file CONFIRMED is part of the Exercise.

The 2nd point is corrections. It’s a Training/Practice net, so we’re focused on working correctly. Veteran ORCA Op recognize mistakes, but they don’t correct other Ops. NCS corrects operational errors. That’s part of our job. Most Ops want to know when they’re off course. We try to make corrections constructive. We value every member and never intend to be sharp or embarrass anyone.

Next is an NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise w/Don KJ7VGV < K7KYk

Very good decodes tonight on most stations. Really enjoyed seeing what rigs ops are running.

Congratulations on this anniversary of ORCA NET. What an accomplishment and hats off to Doug and Mindy for your dedicated efforts at digital education.

The Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race will commence on Jan 18, 2023 with the first vet checks in Joseph OR. The race begins on Jan 19. This is one of the few Iditarod and Yukon Quest qualifying events and typically draws skilled teams from around the country. If you have an interest in volunteering as a radio op please take a look at the ECX web site, eaglecapextreme.com, for more information.  All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

ORCA < WA7HHE, GE to the net, Seems too many irons in the fire lately with the storm bringing in about 5-1/2 inches of snow. Helping out my neighbors I’m going to need some more fuel for the snowblower. Interesting net for our County EOC, helped furnish our ECOMM group with Radiation meters and called in background radiation readings from various parts of our county as a background reference. Is in the spirite of being prepared but not sure its a world I would want to walk out into.  Big thanks to Doug and Mindy for their dedication, news indicates huge storm incoming to the West Coast, fearful of flooding. Everyone stay safe < Brad

Thanks for running the net tonight, congratulations on 10 years of ORCA! A bomb cyclone is forming over the pacific ocean, and is headed towards California, Heavy rain & wind is expected on Wednesday & Thursday, gusts up to 70mph in areas. I Recently set up a satellite dish for reception on GOES-17 and it has given me some very nice satellite images of the earth, and makes it easy to track the weather and get alerts. If you have the time it’s a very fun project and can be very useful to have.

Stay Safe and happy new years to all.

First run on my new MacBook Air. Bought it 8 months ago and decided to finally get it running during this snowy week since I couldn’t do much outside. Had a few issues but managed to get the FLDIGI, n nd AmpoÌ   serface would not upload the FLMSG file location when selected. I manually entered what I believe is the correct file location! Let’s hope it is. 😄

Doug and Mindy: Happy ORCA 10th and congratulations on this tremendous milestone!!

ORCA NCS< W6DLW, Doug/Mindy, Wow, 10 years. Congratulations. Great exercise tonight. Have been dealing with snow for the last few days. Having said that it looks like we may get some rain over the next few days as temps. will be moving into the high 30’s & low 40’s. Not much else going on here. Nice seeing everyone on the waterfall. Everyone stay safe. 73. <W6DLW>

Don KJ7VGV is up first < NCS

Over the weekend had rain that turned into wet snow. About 12 inches of snow that froze with a lot of water content breaking many limps in trees. Barely getting above freezing past couple of days. Had to do a lot of snow shoveling. Ibuprofen was on the menu. More storms to come hope, it’s rain and not more snow since I’m running out of places to put it.
I sent the complete file in 2nd mode as I wasn’t sure what W7LPN Rick needed even though no one else needed 1,2.
<0417Z> KJ7VGV BTN

RR Don  I just demonstrated how easy it is to make dumb errors as NCS     I hit the wrong button and then it’s too late to call it back.  I was thinking Rick didn’t copy ur station, but that would be unusual   most net Ops copy u well.   BK

Yesterday I decided to do a little computer house cleaning w/Revo Uninstaller… long story short… I erased my macros and FLDIGI config and log files. Doug sent me his macros, fldigi.xml, fldigi_def.xml, and fldigi.prefs. We each set up our macros and B/G colors differently. I had an old backup of macros, but its been a few years and a lot of changes since then. I’m sharing this with you to prompt you to backup your macro files and fldigi_def.xml, fldigi.prefs, and logs so that you don’t have to go thru the whole setup process again. It takes a lot of work to create macros and you get used to them being in a certain location. I’m so glad Doug & Don are the active NCS stns tonight. Hope I’ll be back up to full speed by next Tues… we’ll see! Once I get things like I like them,
I’ll be sure to make a copy 😉
Good to see all on the WF & 73, Mindy W7ZAP
