* Active Stations called for COMMENTS only

Band condx tonight were no worse than usual. Distant stations printed well, but some closer stations were weak and broken. Some paths were solid in one direction only. While these condx make traffic-handling difficult, they also provide practice working a difficult band. Hang in there; we’ll be better digital Operators for the experience.

ORCA DIGITAL NET welcomes two new stations, Dave AB6KX in Corona,CA and Matt WD7N in Saratoga Springs,UT. We’ll ask them to ck-in QNX (monitoring) enough sessions to grasp our conventions and protocols. When you do ck-in Active to work the FLAMP Exercise, please work only the primary Exercise until it’s routine. The Optional Exercise within the primary file requires more work, time, and focus. You need to track your position on the Roster while working the Exercise, prepared to answer NCS when called. This takes a bit of time to master, but it’s not Rocket Science, it just takes focus and practice. You will be working many of the tasks necessary to handling traffic on an Emergency or Traffic net.

It appeared we had five stations planning to work the FLAMP Exercise tonight, but only four stations answered NCS and participated. The fifth station was not heard again after ck-in. This happens fairly often. Not everyone is actually reading and following net Protocols. Our website gives a good general overview of ORCA net structure and operations. We send Ck-In protocol and outline net operations in the Preamble before every session.

Our Ck-In protocol is simpler than most nets; it’s designed with members and NCS in mind. We ask only for the information we need to generate a detailed Roster.

1)First-time station = ‘CALL, NAME, QTH’
2)Known station = ‘CALL’
3)Monitoring station = ‘CALL QNX’

When you send, ‘CALL, NAME, QTH’, we know you’re a first time ck-in. We add you to the ORCA Log. When you send, ‘CALL’, we log you Active, participating in all net events. When you send, ‘CALL QNX’ you are Monitoring the net and not engaged by NCS. You can still work the Exercises solo for practice. We FILL and CONFIRM files for Monitoring stations immediately after closing.

Your Ck-In string indicates your understanding of net Protocols; 98% get it right every week. How you work the net is the learning example new Operators are observing and emulating. We’re a training net. Following protocols is important for those just coming aboard and the efficacy of practice for everyone. We want to present a good example of Directed digital net operations. Thanks for helping us conduct a effective training net.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex205.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round
with FLAMP.

Last session, David N2RSN asked for assistance configuring his wife Terry N2RSI’s Yaesu FTDX-
3000. Jaye KE6SLS responded quickly and helped them sort it out. Hats-Off to Jaye for sharing
his digital knowledge. Jaye has been with us since we moved to HF operations; he’s skilled,
experienced, and a capable troubleshooter. We have numerous competent members who are
digital-savvy and willing to assist others.

Remember: Participation in the weekly FLAMP Exercise has been reduced from 10 stations to eight.
As our Roster grows longer, we have less net-time available. When we have more than eight stations
for the Exercise, we’ll ask one or more ORCA veterans to skip the Exercise, making room for newer
stations. We’ll also begin taking early-ck-in at 1845p/0245z. This will help complete ck-in before
the net begins.

You don’t need to be Active to work the FLAMP Exercise. Monitoring stations are encouraged to work
the FLAMP Exercise silently, w/o NCS interaction. You are very likely to FILL the file, even though
you’re not REPORTING to NCS. If you miss any Blocks in the Exercise file, you can FILL directly
after the net closes. We hold a brief session for Monitors to FILL the primary file, or CONFIRM
the Optional Exercise.

If you want an ORCA DIGITAL NET decal, send a SASE to: ORCA DIGITAL NET, 17029 Ferry Creek
Heights, Brookings,OR 97415. These are sun-safe decals with adhesive back. Applied to cups,
manufacturer claims they’ll survive hand washing and some dishwashers.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
(yet another file location & manipulation exercise)

Net Report posted soon: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

Thanks to Tom WB7EUX for the ck-in relay… Next is the FLAMP Exercise w/Mindy W7ZAP < NCS

Tonight’s exercise begins in THOR-100 (352wpm/1800hz). We’ll fill
in THOR-50×1 (176wpm/900hz) & MFSK32 (120wpm/630hz).
Check your BP filter, WIDE mode ahead… < W7ZAP

NCS < WB7EUX – Settling in for the remainder of the winter. About one to two inches of fresh snow on the valley floor, mountains are beautiful. We had a blast of wind this afternoon as predicted by NWS. We spent some time sweeping snow away from the cat condos so the many mousers we host could have some fresh water and food. With all these feline commandos we have not had mice in the garage or gophers in the fields for years.

Thanks for the weekly exercise! 73 < WB7EUX

ORCA < K6ETA Well we’re up to about a foot of snow so far tonight. Snow blower is working great, so our long driveway is no problem… The station is working fine in windy, snowy condx so far. Had to use the amp for an few SSB nets as the band went long earlier… seems to be back now.

Thanks to everyone for the support and patience during our move — we absolutely LOVE it here in Mt Shasta!

Wow, we’ve been beatin’ like a red headed step child down here. Wind over 45 mph, average around 25mph and over an inch of rain in less than an hour. Wow.

My power has gone up/down several tinmes over the last few hours. 1000’s without power down here, major snow condx on all the high roads, downsouth all the way up north and to the east. GRREAT night to just STAY HOME

I was wondering what was going on. I’m an hour off. I thought I would be checking in for the net after missing the entire Mendo emergency HF net. Finally I realized, it’s NOT 7:30, it’s 8:30pm… UGGGGGG, I am so discombobleated! hahaha.
