Tonight was the nosiest band we’ve had in a long time. I eventually had difficulty with the nearest stations except Mindy W7ZAP who is only 6′ distant and does OK on ground wave (-: Welcome to Bill K6QOG, also in Cedar City,UT. Following the net, Mindy & I copied Bill’s flmsg traffic @ 5w nearly perfect. Not bad for tonight’s band. I then had a short 5w QSO with Bill, UT<>OR. The Utah Ops must be doing a bit of digital work fairly regularly. They’re certainly up to speed with the fldigi suite.

Thanks again to Ralph WB6SDR for RELAY work. Ralph is usually well heard by all and has done much of our relaying. Tonight he also relayed KK6RKY Erik’s reception report. Neither Mindy nor I could copy Erik by Comment time, but Ralph had it 100% and relayed it in. Nice work. Brad WA7HHE is also an excellent ORCA relay station. I think his QTH is above 6k/ft. He always has a strong signal.

We’ve done well with the simple file manipulation exercises lately and we can run another one next week. I’ll generate a file that requires manipulation. I was really surprised a few weeks back when I asked how long you’ve been licensed as an Amateur Radio Op. The eleven Ops who responded had 312 years of Amateur membership between them. No wonder the nets run so well; we’re working with so many radio veterans!

We’ve done a great job of minimizing net doubles. I caused the only two tonight with clumsy key strokes, appearing to call two stations at once. Both events were easily sorted and the net ran pretty briskly with 11 active stations. I try to keep the net moving so you don’t have too much idle time. Thanks for being attentive. You also contribute to net efficiency by keeping comments compact and concise. Mindy always has traffic, but often sends ‘QRU’ when we have numerous Ops and longer messages. Tonight, we deferred the REPORT round for Brad’s traffic to close-of-net. As it happened, no fill blocks were needed.

No surprise, images didn’t print well tonight:

ORCA Announcements 25/oct/16

Tonight we return to our regular net routines. Mindy W7ZAP will conduct

the weekly FLAMP exercise.

Remember: You can RELAY fill BLOCKS from FLAMP’s RX tab using the

FETCH and RELAY buttons. If FLAMP does not FETCH the needed BLOCKS,

you can type them into the ‘blocks’ window. Left blank, it will send the

complete file.

We can drop the daytime ORCA net idea for now. Although there’s interest

in holding one, there’s no interest in the NCS role. I understand. Maybe

later in winter, someone will have time for it.

Weekly Net Report usually posted next day

:mg:1156 The Humboldt Amateur Radio Club will be having it’s regular monthly meeting next Tuesday, November 1st, at 1900L. Location to

be determined.

The amateur radio community has been asked to participate in an earthquake drill on Saturday, November 5th, by activating multiple fire

stations and the County EOC. This is a great opportunity for us. I am trying to get the stations set up ahead of time. The Bridgeville station is

on the list of stations to be activated. This will require some dedication from a HAM operator as there is travel involved. The event will last

for at least 4 hours starting at 0900L.

Recordkeeping is a primary objective of exersices and events. An activity log that includes time leaving your house and time arriving at

assigned location, mileage traveled, and such. A station log for on-the-air activities. These items will be turned in after the event. This is all

in keeping with Federal Emergency Management Administrations guidlines. More to be discussed at the Radio Club meeting.

Send any bulletins or announcements for the Eureka Emergency VHF Net to wa6nbg@yahoo.com.

This ends the digital bulletin for October 24th.

:sb:79 Review Finds Washington State’s Plan for a Megaquake ‘Grossly Inadequate’

:mg:1567 The largest disaster drill ever conducted in the Pacific Northwest found that the region remains dangerously unprepared to deal

with a Cascadia megaquake and tsunami.

Washington state officials called their own response plans “grossly inadequate,” according to a draft report and records reviewed by The

Seattle Times. The report warns that “the state is at risk of a humanitarian disaster within 10 days” of the quake.

Beyond the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the report says Washington lacks any long-term strategy to help the region’s economy,

cities and businesses recover from what would be one of the worst natural disasters the United States has ever faced.

“Everything we depend on to live our 21st-century lives is going to be significantly degraded or eradicated,” said Washington Emergency

Management Director Robert Ezelle. “The needs are going to be immediate, they are going to be urgent and they are going to be

overwhelming.”

During the drill, Seattle emergency managers got little or no response to their requests for assistance, including for urban search-and-rescu

e teams, according to the city’s analysis of the exercise.
