Band condx are improving for some and deteriorating for others. Long propagation is improving at the expense of short. Stations close to NCS are having the most difficulty. Our colleagues in Humboldt County,CA are only 100mi south. This is usually a seasonal problem. When Jaye KE6SLS can’t copy NCS in Eureka,CA, Gene W1EEP usually has solid copy in Pine Valley,UT. Later in the year, it’s the opposite. Hats-Off to these ORCA veterans who persevere thru difficult band condx.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes John KD0NBH in Kansas City,MO. Missouri is beginning to look a bit like Utah where there’s quite a concentration of digital Ops. We logged 34 stations tonight with a full-house of 8 stations in the NBEMS Exercise.

We ran a little long tonight too. The Radiogram form has lots of overhead, making files longer. Sending the test image in Traffic Round also took more time. We won’t do this every session. An hour is already a long net and some members are two time zones East.

Printing your test images was interesting. We seldom receive the image ourselves. They’re published below. Thanks for making first use of the Macro successful. We’re developing Macro knowledge and experience while polishing our instruction-parsing (and writing) skills. We may learn more about the paths between stations and the strengths and limitations of our antennas.

We did well with the Path Evaluation Macro. Here’s a couple things to remember:
1) Use the original form. Just edit in your CALLSIGN. Transmitted TEXT should be, ‘ORCA < W1AW’. This macro is easy to modify. Use the original macro for ORCA operations and modify a copy you can personalize as you like. There will only be a couple bytes difference in our files due to the characters in our CALLSIGNS

2) Send the 140×140 pixel image as received; don’t use a screen-grab.

3) Don’t forget to edit in the argument, ‘G,’. Otherwise, the image is sent in FLDIGI’s default Color mode, taking twice as long. We’ll experiment with this Macro again next month.

If you came for the after-net Monitor’s Session, but couldn’t get in, we closed it soon after starting. With two stations logged, a conversation began on the frequency. We couldn’t get their attention and closed the net. You can confirm NBEMS Exercise files in any Monitor’s Session. If you didn’t get in tonight, we’ll Fill or CONFIRM your files next week.

When you don’t hear NCS for a scheduled event, especially on HF, don’t assume no one is there. NCS is likely working, or trying to work, stations you don’t hear. When in doubt, be patient. NCS may pick you up by Relay.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Another week and another lesson in writing instructions. We muffed the Mode Shoot-Out instructions. We were thinking to fill the file that needed the least total fill blocks. Later, we realized it doesn’t matter which of the two files you fill. It makes more sense for each Op to fill the file that needs the least blocks. Writing instructions clear enough that everyone understands them isn’t simple. We’re working on it.

The instructions flaw didn’t effect the results. Overall, more OFDM blocks were decoded than PSK-R. OFDM will be useful for large files. Oddly, OFDM leaves Squelch open. We used to think this would eventually be addressed, but it now seems the Developer has moved on. This may not be much of an issue for most Ops. Before publishing the Net Log in the Net Report, we edit noise from the log. Open squelch adds a lot of noise to the log.

Again tonight we’ll use the Radiogram form in the NBEMS Exercise. Health and Welfare traffic usually falls to Amateur Radio Operators. H&W traffic is not limited to matters concerning individuals and families, but also applies to groups like nets, ARC’s, communities, etc. Our western nexus for listing NTS traffic is Western Digital Net. There you can list digital Radiograms in TEXT form directly to a digital NTS back-bone. Listing in TEXT form requires two additional lines of TEXT. Instructions for listing digital Radiograms in TEXT form are available at: http://westerndigitalnet.org

In the Traffic Round, we’ll make first use of the Path Evaluation Macro. We’ll ask the Active stations to use the macro to send our test image before sending their traffic. We’ll compile those images for the Net Report depicting how both NCS stations receive the Active stations. Be sure to use the original macro; change only the CALLSIGN. The difference in byte count between stations will be 1-2 characters due to different CALLSIGN lengths. The difference in TX time will be tiny. You can download the Path Evaluation Macro and the test image in the website sidebar: http://orcadigitalnet.com

ORCA < WA7HHE, wanted to wish everyone a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. This time of year can be stressful, so if NCS will permit I’d like to offer the following gig for a Joyful Thanks Giving:

You put your right wing in,

You put your right wing out,

You put your right wing in,

And you shake it all about.

You do the turkey jerky and you turn yourself around.

That’s what it’s all about!

Repeat with your left wing, your right drumstick (right foot), left drumstick, waddle (your chin, or a cloth hanging from your chin), and tail feathers!

ORCA NCS> W7ZAP, Another great net as usual. Thanks to both of you for all you do each Tuesday night. Doing the ORCA Test Image w/Path Evaluation Macro in the Traffic Round was great. Thanks for the heads up on the color mode. Not much to share this evening other than the weather is great for this time of year here in Southwestern, Utah. Here’s wishing you both a wonderful and festive Thanksgiving. Please stay safe. 73 to all and again Happy Thanksgiving everyone. W6DLW.

Moved the shack this week to the garage in Reno to have more room to spread all the equipment out. So hopefully reception will be better. Still erecting a new antennae in the desert still more to do will try to complete soon after thanksgiving and give it a try in another week or two. As always appreciate the work the both of you do.

Very rough coøx here w/o nvis. Amazing, I did cpy image. No FLM roster nor any of the FLA ex.

From what I have been observing, stations that are 300 miles or further copy well. Stations closer copy partial. Stations close have little copy. However, long fades will occur on all copy.

Another mostly sunny day. Great to have fully charged station batteries this time of year.

Hope everyone has a GREAT Thanksgiving!
