* Active Stations called for COMMENTS only

Band condx tonight didn’t support everyone, but were workable for most. PNW stations were more difficult to copy tonight. Our path to Keith WA0TJT in Kansas City,MO was solid; Keith worked the entire net w/o issue. We connected him well w/35w. Digital modes are designed for low power; conserving power is important in emergencies. We may be operating from generators and solar battery banks.

Thanks to Dave K7DV for relaying block#4 in the FLAMP Exercise. We managed to fill all six stations with an odd assortment of modes. PSK-250R, our opening mode and least likely to succeed actually did quite well. Brad WA7HHE came within 2 blocks of CONFIRMING it. Not bad for a 250hz wide mode in iffy condx. Keith missed only one block in Kansas City,MO when we switched to THOR-50×1. We CONFIRMED Keith with MFSK-32 when THOR-22 was unable.

And, Thanks to the six Ops who logged in Active to work the FLAMP Exercise. There are two big benefits to working the weekly Exercise. First, we’re embedding important traffic-handling routines and tactics in memory. By practicing weekly, we deepen and perfect these skills. We’ll use them automatically w/o dithering in stressful conditions. Practice Smart. Practice Hard.

Another important benefit is presenting an excellent working model of traffic-handling routines for Monitoring stations. They are observing the Exercise and can soon be confident enough to participate. We appreciate every Monitoring station. It’s the entry-point for working the net. We learn a lot by observation. Observation is often the best beginning to mastering a task. When you feel confident, ck-in Active and give the FLAMP Exercise a try. After a few session, you’ll be working as smoothly as the experts. In actual emergency situations, we would use FLAMP only when we couldn’t pass traffic w/o errors. If band condx permit, we process traffic w/o FLAMP, saving time and energy.

We received email from two stations that couldn’t work NCS tonight. Both had antenna issues. Mark KA7ULD in Helena,MT was only copying 5%. He discovered that high winds had dropped half his antenna to the ground. Dave AB6KX in Corona,CA also had antenna trouble. Using the SDR station in Half Moon Bay,CA, he worked the primary and Optional FLAMP Exercises. There’s more than one way to skin a cat. I think it’s still OK to use that old saying. Some descriptive old sayings have been redefined and are now verboten.

How much power should we be using to work ORCA or any net? The minimum required for solid copy. Always. We don’t default to maximum power. We’re training for emergency conditions when we may be working w/o commercial power. We learn what minimum power is by experimenting. NCS is always at 35w. You can use this knowledge to help determine how much power you need to work NCS. It’s not necessary for every station on the net to copy you perfectly. Your key contact is NCS. In need, we can connect you to other stations by Relay.

In the Comment round, time permitting, we’ll give signal reports to help stations find effective minimum power. We won’t have time for a numerous reports while you descend slowly, but will do our best to help you determine minimum power setting.

A few Ops still send QRU at ck-in. QRU means ‘I have no Traffic’. ORCA is a Training net, we’re not structured to process actual Traffic. Western Digital Net is a full service Traffic net. You’ll notice the difference in our Ck-In Protocols. Naturally, we will work an actual Emergency directly and forgo training, but on ordinary days, we’re a training net. When you ck-in with your CALLSIGN only, we log you Active and expect you to participate in all net events. When you send CALLSIGN QNX, we log you in and out simultaneously. QNX= ‘excused from the net’. So, sending QRU at ck-in is redundant and we don’t know if you seek Active or Monitoring status. Thanks for understanding and helping us run the net efficiently.

While we don’t engage Monitors (QNX) during the net, we do hold a brief Monitor’s session after net to FILL/CONFIRM Exercise files for Ops that work the FLAMP Exercise silently, and Ops with observations or questions.

Doug’s note: Something unusual occurred tonight at NCS. You may have noticed. It was pretty remarkable for me. The net was large and busy with a few minor glitches here and there. Over the years, we’ve learned digital-NCS sufficiently to flow fairly well with disruptions, QRM, etc. Tonight Mindy was in the Groove and flowing along smoothly. Then I noticed she had added two new tasks that I didn’t initially catch. While CONFIRMING FLAMP files in the Traffic round, she was sending real-time signal reports to the Reporting stations. Then, during the Comment Round, she was typing replies to the Commenting stations during their transmission, both activities inserting new tasks in-between regular tasks. I was impressed; you don’t see NCS activity from the field. Unlike other digital nets, ORCA has some fairly complex protocols. We don’t have much time for chit-chat during net operations. Mindy added these two tasks w/impressive ease! She has unused attention and focus. My wonderful life partner is also an outstanding radio partner!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex208.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round
with FLAMP.

Regarding the IARU Region 2 Band Plan & ARRL’s FCC proposals, RM-11759, and RM-11828,
we’ve decided, not-to-worry for awhile. ARRL’s proposal would require us to relocate ORCA
DIGITAL NET from 3.581 to 3600-3625mhz. Here they intend to group most digital signals
over 500hz. Remaining on 3.581, we’d have to forego all modes over 500hz (MFSK-32= 630hz).

Remaining on 3.581 and using only <500hz modes will lengthen nets and eliminate experimenting
with modes over 500hz. We routinely use mode as wide as 1930hz. We experiment with these modes
nearly every FLAMP Exercise. The Exercise is designed to expose members to the wide fast modes
best suited for speed and accuracy in difficult HF condx during emergencies.

We can remain on 3.581 by dropping back to MFSK-22 (430hz, 80wpm, MFSK-32= 120wpm) and
conduct the FLAMP Exercise with <500hz modes. The Exercise would be similar, but we’d have no
experience with the wide/fast modes. Learning and practicing with the wider modes would fall to
individual initiative. It’s not the best training solution, but maybe the best solution over all.

Over the years, we’ve established 3.581 as a western digital watering-hole. There are four well
established digital nets on 3.581, Monday thru Thursday. We’ve been here long enough to be well
known and developed good frequency neighbors generally. Contestants sometimes excepted )-: That’s
worth a lot. We are very unlikely to find sufficient elbow room between 3600 & 3625 among ACDS,
beacons, Winlink Gateways, and DSB AM Phone. ARRL recommends an exception for DSB Phone,
granting them 6khz signals in a 25khz sector.

It’s likely we’ll remain on 3.581 when FCC approves the proposals and reduce our modes to <500hz.
Your thoughts and comments are welcome.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com They make
Net Reports more useful. (another file location & manipulation exercise)

:sb:58 FBI Issues Warnings After Florida Water System Cyberattack
:mg:587

Earlier this month, an attacker significantly increased levels of lye in the Oldsmar water treatment system remotely. An employee realized the attack was happening

when their mouse began moving across the screen. The attack was quickly reversed. While the lye likely wouldn’t have been enough to kill any of the 15,000 customers

the water system serves, the damage a more sophisticated attacker might have done with the same access could have been much worse, experts said.

CS < WB7EUX – Have to apologize – power creeped up to 80 watts. This happens consistently. I need to check with the KX3 forums bout this.

Otherwise quiet in Wallowa County. Vaccinations are going well with only a few reported blatant line jumpers. Lack of ethics.

We have received quite a bit of snow as is typical for this part of the West during this time period. Not many problems with the exception of lots of accidents

including two rollovers. Luckily minor injuries.

Thanks for the net and 73! de WB7EUX

Hello Everyone! It has been a busy semester! So far we have been doing better in terms of COVID, but next week is Spring Break. Many of my students have had the

vaccine (many are pre-meds and work or volunteer in medical settings) so that might be part of it.

Hope to have a good break next week and play with some radio equipment.

I am currently using Antenna #1 and hopefully this is enough TX to get an idea of S/N for a report

BK

OK this is Antenna #2 and I will also give a sentence or two in order to let the S/N level out.

BK

Back to Antenna #1 again and I would appreciate any reports sent to K6ETA@comcast.net

Getting RPi 4b and support gear ordered in a renewed effort to establish a packet radio gateway beyond the coast. Entire system powered from solar.

NVIS lost by 7pm, very happy and surprised to hear NCS so far.

Computer locked hard during the beginning of our Humboldt HF digital net yesterday. First time I have suffered such indignities!

Thank you for the continued updates on digital modes on HF.

PSK-250R RXiD continues to fail to function here. I was able to manually change it in time to catch FLamp msg. Great FLamp round!

Still seeing some members using TXiD during net.

Seems like the ops are really “on the ball” tonight. Hats off to all!

Thank you for the enjoyable honing of skills tonight. Be safe all.

ffic Round as Brad WA7HHE does regularly. Please follow Brad’s example and send only a brief abstract of the article. Include a reference (URL) for those interested to

follow-up. Keep them short, and germane to the group; our nets are already long. TU

Please ignore the error in the FLAMP Exercise that says, ‘use this file for Traffic Round’. The primary file is only to be CONFIRMED. The Optional Exercise is good

for Traffic.

At Ck-In, ORCA has no QRU option. If you ck-in to participate (CALLSIGN), you’re involved in all net events. If you’re Monitoring (CALLSIGN QNX), you’re not engaged

during nets. We work with QNX Ops in the Monitor’s Session directly after net. You can Comment, FILL/CONFIRM the FLAMP Exercise, or CONFIRM the Optional Exercise. We

do our best to keep nets from running too long. 1-1.5hr is a long time to remain alert and focused.

Good work with the RadioGram Exercise. We may see a lot of this form in emergencies. We have a macro to ‘Relay ORCA Ck-In’. See the website, Macro page.

I read the comments and am very alarmed about LOWERING power to 50 watts for digital modes. I want to remind ALL ops, our 100 watt rigs can only handle 50 watts x
