Until further notice, Early Ck-In begins at 0200z/1900p. Long Summer days, recreational opportunities, and poor band condx result in fewer Ck-ins. It happens every year, but this year seems a bit tougher. We may return to a 45m Early Ck-In by Winter. Thanks for checking-in early; it saves net time for training and practice.

Hats-Off to everyone who continues working ORCA despite the worst band condx since 2013. Training and practicing in these condx will produce very capable digital Ops. Current condx require numerous Relays and Relaying is one of our most important tactics. Imagine the challenge of passing traffic accurately by Phone these days. We have a lot to be thankful for.

The Advanced NBEMS Exercise was difficult tonight, even w/only four Ops participating. Gene W1EEP rechecked QNX mid-Exercise and Lamar AE6LJ disappeared about the same time. We knew Gene would have trouble with the Exercise when he didn’t copy our acknowledgment of his ck-in. But, we had a plan for Gene. Brad WA7HHE usually copies us well, even in poor condx. We planned to ask Brad to Relay the 3rd pass. That would almost certainly CONFIRM Gene. Maybe next time.

Hard-to-Fill stations are good for the Exercise. We then get more practice Relaying FLAMP Fill blocks. Even switching MFSK-32 to 22 for the 3rd pass didn’t Fill the last block for Bruno KG7VVN. Missing only one block, he saw enough of the file text on the waterfall to complete the Exercise w/o CONFIRMING the file. Good problem-solving, Bruno!

The Advanced NBEMS Exercise question was, “Why change QST to CALLSIGN when sending the Exercise file to NCS in the Traffic Round?” Two Ops completed the Exercise and answered the question correctly. QST traffic is addressed to all stations on frequency. Naturally, some Ops want to Report and Fill the file. Our NBEMS Exercise Traffic Round completes Advanced Exercises, simulating passing emergency traffic to NCS; only the addressee REPORTS.

On July 7th, Doug K7KY wrote to the volunteer NCS that sustain Western Digital Net. He suggested beginning a thread to determine a volunteer NCS schedule and confer on WDN’s format. No replies implies time to move along. Everyone’s busier or more preoccupied than usual this Summer. We certainly understand; we’ve less time for Radio too.

Tonight, we mistakenly began the net on the wrong antenna. Doug’s antenna usually gives the best coverage and NCS always uses it. We switch antennas for the NBEMS Exercise. When we went to switch for the Exercise, we found them already switched. Doug ran the first portion of the net with Mindy’s antenna. Keep this in mind while reviewing tonight’s images.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight we have an Advanced NBEMS Exercise and Traffic Round. Our Traffic Round is part of the Advanced Exercise. We don’t seek formal Traffic. Emergencies excepted. The current Geomagnetic storm implies tough condx for 80m. We’ve chosen robust modes for the NBEMS Exercise.

It appears we’ll continue deciding who will call Western Digital Net ad hoc. It’s not ideal, but better than closing the net. We were hoping for some discussion between the principles. Our impression of Steve K6ETA’s email is that he’s interested and concerned, but not thinking to lead.

We’ll experiment with Macros again the 1st Tuesday of August, 02/Aug/22. Meanwhile, experiment on your own with Delayed Execution Macro Tags, FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.20, Ch20.  There’s a limited number of these very useful <@ Tags. They set some FLDIGI conditions after transmission ends.

There’s a number of pre-configured Time/Date Tags. There is also a table of characters that represent every aspect of Time/Date data. See this table in FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.20, Ch18.1. Experiment with making your own Time/Date Tags.

If you would like to conduct ORCA NBEMS Exercises for another net, Instructions and previous Exercises are available.

Beginning next week, 26/Jul/22, Early Ck-In will change from 45min b4 net to 30min b4 net.

CME + daylight hrs = tough band condx. Tnx for ur patience & persistance. Band was more challenging than I anticipated. If u hv 2 signal reports… 1st is during ck-in on Doug’s ant… (ooops!) and 2nd is on my ant later in net.

Great to see all on the WF.

Tnx Mindy    good reception report      BK   did you notice the dates in Mindy’s report header?   she’s been using this file for 5yrs !!! and   the question in the Exercise was answered correctly by all (2 actually).   when traffic is addressed QST  everyone on freq could ask for fills.  this used to happen on the net so we changed the format to have all Reports sent to NCS so only NCS Reports
