We misjudged band condx again this evening.  An Unsettled prediction for 80m usually implies fair band condx, but tonight the prediction was misleading.  Ck-In gave a clear indication of band condx; we needed more Relays than usual. In the background, we quickly revised NBEMS Exercise modes, substituting PSK-500 for OFDM-500F. The Exercise ran smooth and efficient, as usual. Hats-Off to the eight participants. They’ll be assets on any Traffic or Emergency net.  Actual emergencies will have a mix of practicing and non-practicing digital Ops. They will all be needed, but those that practice regularly will be comfortable, focused, and efficient.

We frequently remind members about TxID for two reasons. 1st, we’re a Training net; there’s no value in practicing incorrectly. Net Protocols establish net procedures. Reading and following written instructions is fundamental to digital traffic-handling. Also important is situational awareness. TxID is perfect for increasing situational awareness. Although ORCA members work the net with TxID disabled, there are times when they do need TxID. Members have TxID disabled during nets and turn it On & OFF as needed. TxID management is useful for developing focus and attention.  You can practice TxID management in QSO with colleagues.  Turn it OFF for a few exchanges and back ON for practice. You already monitor and adjust Squelch for signal strength and Mode characteristics. Extend that focus to TxID.

Use genuine ORCA Ck-In Macros, available on our website Macro page. You’ll always have the Ck-In string correct and be LOCKED @ 1500wf with TxID disabled, all with a single click.

Next week we’ll ask two station to send the Path Evaluation Macro just b4 Comments. Please email only those two images for publication. We don’t publish beginning/end ORCAtest images when we have ORCAtest images transmitted b4 the Comment Round. Thanks for emailing the images; they make the Net Report more interesting and useful. Email images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

We appreciate your ongoing participation and support. It wouldn’t be a network without you. We think you’ll be seeing a lot of our ORCA colleagues in the years ahead.  Digital networking is destined to grow and ORCA Ops are likely to be organizers and leaders.

Configuring FLDIGI RX/TX Audio Signals correctly:
Setting the correct hardware, operating system, and fldigi received audio levels is not difficult, but it is the one setup procedure most often done incorrectly. FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.24, Chapter  Initial Configuration / RX TX Audio Levels

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features the FLMSG Radiogram form. We may see a lot of this form this summer, while supporting our
communities and Amateur colleagues. Going forward, we’ll be demonstrating and practicing routines for passing traffic off the net
frequency. This routine enables NCS to pass multiple messages simultaneously, minimizing net length. Here’s an outline of off-net-freq
traffic-handling:

When busy, Traffic & Emergency nets pass formal traffic off the net frequency. Western Digital Net will be processing formal traffic, not
necessarily receiving it. To save time, we’ll pass formal traffic off-net-freq. Here’s the routine:

KE6SLS checks in with traffic 4 Scotia,CA. NCS sends ,’Who can take traffic 4 Scotia,CA’. N6FPV volunteers. NCS sends, ‘KE6SLS, take
N6FPV to 3.582 and pass ur QTC’. KE6SLS sends, ‘KE6SLS < N6FPV, QSY 3.582’. N6FPV sends, ‘N6FPV QSY 3.582′. Both station QSY
3.582 to pass traffic & NCS continues net operations.

When they finish, they Recheck with their CALLSIGN (TX Op always 1st). KE6SLS sends,”KE6SLS’. NCS sends, ‘KE6SLS Go’. Now,
KE6SLS is back on net and sends, ‘KE6SLS 1 QTC TX’. NCS acknowledges. N6FPV sends, ‘N6FPV’. NCS sends, ‘N6FPV Go’. N6FPV
sends, ‘N6FPV 1 QTC RX’. NCS acknowledges and continues w/net business.

That’s the fundamentals. The details we’ll see in operation next month. Macros are useful 4 these routines. To Recheck with your
CALLSIGN in text @ 1500, you may have to wait until frequency is clear. But, NCS can see your VidID while another station is sending.
NCS will finish current exchange and bring you in.

There are a few more details, but that’s the fundamentals. Jaye KE6SLS & Matt N6FPV will demonstrate this routine for us, mid-2-late
May.

Again this week, Jaye KE6SLS spent an hour on the phone with me sorting out remote viewing apps in Linux & RPi Bullseye. Jaye
knows a lot about radio apps and even more about Linux. Jaye is not the only ORCA Op with extensive specific knowlege and experience
. There’s an untapped cornucopia of experience and knowledge on our network. Currently, we’ve no database or informal inventory.
When you need specific assistance, try asking during Comments. There’s a lot more skills and knowledge aboard than anyone knows. A
colleague may know just what you need. If we don’t ask, we won’t know.

Don KJ7VGV has already written ‘How to’ instructions for FLNET. We plan to host his instructions on ORCA’s website. Now, it seems
useful to expand our Resources Page for explanations/instructions authored by ORCA Ops. Your thoughts and suggestions are welcome
in Comments or email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.comnazctsecpné£ne ian

My ICOM 746 started randomly power cycling, at first thought it was PSU browning out, but nope, then I tried putting some extra fan on
the outtake and that solved it, seems I need to get into this radio and clean it and make sure air flow is good!

Look forward to the off freq tfc exercise next month!

ASlso wow that signal from K7KY tonight! Very strong!

Thanks NCS and all for another great net.
I’ve actually participated in other exercises on these Tuesdays, and some Thursdays.
I learn something every time.
Just as stated earlier, the untapped resources here are fantasitic. Can’t wait to learn more.
If ever in the Seattle/Metro area on a Monday eve, join us for a local VHF/UHF digi net: https://www.psdhn.org/
Practice makes progress!

NCS < WB7EUX – Unusual for my station to decode on the first transmission. Especially as band conditions deteriorate as we head
toward the solstice.

Snow is leaving our north pasture and I’m preparing to install the radial field for a 10m beacon station. Luckily not much work there
considering the wavelength. Once I have that completed I will erect a half wave vertical probably constructed from PVC with a center
wire for radiation. I’m hoping the take off angle will be lower then with a shorter quarter wave antenna. Luckily the conduit is already in
place to run the coax back into the shack.

Overnight low forecasted at 18F. However, the daffodils are blooming!

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

For rough conditions I was happy to see I received everything at 100% except for KE6SLS, which says 0 but looks received. May be
FLAMP acting up.

I regularly work these exercises silently due to an early work schedule and kids bed-times, but it was great to participate as an active
station tonight!

I have learned a lot from this net, and those who take part in it. So thank you all, keep up the great work, and 73!

Good signal Dane (S9) KE6SLS used a mode that likely didn’t work well for others, except closeby stns. I was surprised and pleased that
I copied it. Good to see how modes do in different condx.

Started working on toughbook today. Now has xfce & latest mint os. I
am going to attempt to build a hamlib deb package. Spent hours reading
how to do this type of build and found one guide that looks promising.
If it works, I will also build an ARM version, but that will require
more reading!

Yesterday evening, just about 6pm, we had a major thunder & lightning
storm here. More snow at 2000’. Picked up another 1/2” of rain to
boot. Some more rain is falling this evening.

100% copy on all FLA, except NCS’s pskr500 which I required 2 blocks.
For an iffy band condition night, no complaints from this op!

I just read a story of an op with similar situation. Much trouble-
shooting. End of the session it was discovered his power supply had
some major ripples (basically AC added to DC) and once the supply was
changed out, radio very happy again. His rig was an IC-7100. He was
using a 20A PSU, which is very borderline for 100w HF rig. Use a
scope or an analogue meter to check PSU voltage.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA < K7KY Thanks for following Ck-In protocol. We’ve designed Ck-In to make it easy to Ck-In and easy for us to log and generate
a Roster. CALLSIGN in CAPS is easier to read. All on a single line is easy to read quickly, keeping it simple. And, giving us a few
moments to Log the previous station lets us keep up with Ck-Ins. Ck-In & the net ran like clockwork again tonite.

On Directed Nets, NCS is the Conductor; all communications go thru NCS. It’s more important on digital nets. Doubles usually scramble
both signals.

Our Daffodils are nearly 30yrs old! They’re all over, in the weeds & Blackberries too. We planted them everywhere, almost and most
are still alive, but invisible in other stuff these days. Some are still here, but fading fast. Spring!
