Band condx were much better than usual for most stations tonight, but not for everyone; short skip still fades early in the net. 3 of 8 Ops CONFIRMED the NBEMS Exercise file in OFDM-500F with one transmission. OFDM-500F is 480+wpm; that’s fast for 62.5baud & 500hz/bw. OFDM-750F is 720+wpm, 125baud, 750hz/bw. These Modes really shines when band condx are favorable. No one CONFIRMED the 2nd transmission in PSK-250R even though 2 stations needed only 1 block. 5 stations CONFIRMED the 3rd transmission in MFSK-32.

Occasionally, we’re asked why not use more modes for the NBEMS Exercises? Initially, we did experiment with more modes, but over time, we’ve determined which modes are most useful in marginal band condx. Olivia is very robust and also very slow. No need to practice w/Olivia; we know it’s reliable and we’ll certainly use it when needed. We recently stopped using modes that violate the FCC rule against modes above 300baud on frequencies below 10m. We still have numerous viable modes for difficult band condx.

TxID & FLAMP’s Preamble: In poor band condx, we send TxID more than once. A brief flash of lightning can zap a single TxID transmission. In poor band condx, we usually send TxID twice. We do the same in FLAMP for the Preamble (block#0). On the Transmit Tab, ‘Hdr Rpt’ is set to 2, sending the Header (Preamble/block#0) twice. This block is crucial to reassembling the file upon reception; it contains the reassembly data. Sometimes, some Header info is also in block#1. If you’re passing numerous files to a single receiver, you can change back to a single Header transmission once you’ve established solid contact.

We had 4 stations working the after-net Monitor’s Session tonight. It didn’t go smoothly, and took a little more time than usual. We’ve been refining the boilerplate describing and leading up to the Monitor’s Session, but it still needs some polish. The Monitor’s Session should be running much like the main net. We first run a brief Ck-In to see who’s here and then begin with the first station and work down the Roster. When we do it orderly, it usually takes little time. When we call the Monitor’s Session, we’ve already been an hour or more on net; everyone is tired and ready to QRT. Some Ops are two time zones earlier; it’s nearing midnight for them. This after-net session is important for learning the NBEMS Exercise and net protocols and conventions. We try to conduct it as orderly as the main net.

If you’ve joined ORCA DIGITAL NET recently, most of what you need to know to work the net is available at the website: http://orcadigitalnet.com  Reading is the first step in learning to work the net. Next is observation. Pay attention to how ORCA veterans work the net. They’re the reason our nets run efficiently. We get a lot done in an hour by following simple net Protocols and conventions. You’re unlikely to find another digital net with a simpler Ck-In Protocol.

Another note for newer Ops is our experiments with Macros. We had numerous experiments with Macros last year and we’ll continue experimenting with them this year. If you need help coming up to speed w/Macros, ask us or any of the veterans. There’s a lot more Macro knowledge on the net today than there was two years ago. Macros are very useful in digital operations; they save a lot of typing, time, and can set/revise station configuration instantly. What’s not to like about Macros?

Macros will be central to next week’s Comment Round. You’ll use the Path Evaluation Macro and optionally, the Comment Macro. Whether or not you use the Comment Macro, combine your Path Evaluation image and comments in a single transmission. You already know how to daisy-chain Macros; you can do this or add your comments to the Path Macro, as you like. Image can be before or after comments, your choice. Send them in a single transmission. Test w/your transmitter OFF. You can observe most Macro functions w/o transmitting. If you must transmit to test, use a dummy load.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

FLMSG ICS.309 is the form for tonight’s NBEMS Exercise. This form is useful for basic net logging, but doesn’t accommodate the
emergency net NCS who has to track stations holding traffic w/no receiver, stations off freq passing traffic, and stations receiving
traffic. In past emergency net exercises, we recorded this info with pencil & paper and transcribed it to an ICS.309 for submission.
FLNET is more comprehensive and may accommodate these events. Currently, only Don KJ7VGV is conversant in FLNET.
However these events are recorded, they’re part of Emergency net NCS duties.

WDN has been w/o regular NCS well beyond a year. Jaye KE6SLS & Don are keeping the lights on. We’ve been adamant about
keeping it afloat, but our thinking is beginning to shift, or at least, we’re widening our perspective. The missing WDN element is the
Net Control role. We see another issue within the lack of WDN/NCS. While WDN needs NCS Ops, our digital community also
needs NCS Ops. In a real emergency of more than a few days, four qualified NCS is insufficient. They’ll need relief. Experience
running WDN, a small and relatively easy net to run, would be invaluable. Experience running ORCA NBEMS Exercises as Don &
Bruno KG7VVN are doing is also invaluable. We need four more Ops capable of running nets. You can learn at WDN in small
portions be partnering with Don or Jaye to work a portion of the net, like calling the Comment Round for starters. Complex tasks are
more easily learned in small steps.

If there’s insufficient interest in keeping WDN afloat, we can practice NCS skills here. We used to practice off-net-freq traffic-handl
ing; we can do it again. We also used to practice sending fire maps. They take more time to TX, but can save a long & lengthy
textual explanation. We also have to address scribing for emergency & traffic nets. With no formal traffic, we’ve not needed those
skills here.

Macro Exercise 24/Jan/23: Next week, we’ll again use our Path Evaluation Macro in the Comment Round. If you’ve not yet
configured this macro, download it from the website, right hand column, and be ready for the 24th. Active stations will send this
Macro during Comments. You can send the regular ORCAtest image, or the 10th Anniversary image, your choice. Use your
Comment Macro and Path Evaluation Macro together. Alter them to send image and comments in a single transmission. Test your
Macros with your radio off or set to Zero power out. If you’re not up-to-speed w/Macros, no worries, send your comments as usual.

We publish images from the Comment Round in the Net Report. We’ve been working with Macros for about a year now. If you’ve
joined us recently, you may need to catch up w/Macros. If you need help, contact us: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

NCS < WB7EUX – I think that’s the first time my station has correctly decoded in ODFM mode. Yay!

The Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race gets underway with Vet checks in Enterprise tomorrow. The various races start Thursday.
This is one of the few qualifying events for those mushers and teams wanting a slot in the Iditarod and Yukon Quest races. More
info at http://www.eaglecapextreme.com. A full contingent of amateur radio ops will provide communications through three repeaters
and one remote base. I helped tonight with level adjustments and quality reports.

Ten meters has been extremely active for the past few weeks. My beacon at 28.202 racked up close to 200 spots yesterday.

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

We had a nice break in the storm pattern.  Today we had a good sky
offering some long over due photons to my solar panels.  Tomorrow will
bring more rain, then it looks like many clear days to follow. This
is certainly welcome news for many in the far NW California. Allow
the rivers to lower and crews the time to patch & mind the many roads
damaged thus far.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

Working our way through the proficiency list.
We did some testing on 40M last weekend with very good results statewide, and may go to that frequency.

I do have some questions about structure of complex macros.
They are apparently not a sequential logic program.

In the file ex292.txt, I appear to have received all 7 blocks except the first part of block 0.
I was able to read the body text, so Resend not really required.
And I have done that type of exercise many times,  so I’m OK.

for the file W6DLW_ex292.309, I received 6 blocks but not block 0.
The body was compressed, so unreadable.
