We expected a marginal band tonight, but we didn’t anticipate it would be unusable. When we began Early Ck-In we only copied a couple stations. The band seemed much worse than expected; we wondered if we’d be able to conduct the net. When we tried switching antenna, we discovered the coax switches were mis-configured, blocking both antennas at the panel. We should have realized something was amiss when both tuners had difficulty tuning. Both of us were working with about 10′ of coax between radio and switch panel. Our LDG auto-tuners managed to find harmony with 10′ of coax, but it wasn’t easy. With that sorted out, the band seemed much better.

Years ago, when band condx were excellent compared to today, we were practicing before net at 5w into dummy loads. Brad WA7HHE copied our signals in Cedar City,UT and said Hello. Those were the days. Operators persevering through current condx will be rewarded for their effort with deeper digital skills.

Anticipating a tough band, we chose PSK-250R, THOR-50×1, & THOR-22 for the NBEMS Exercise.
Results:
PSK-250R: 1 stn
THOR-50×1: 2 stns
THOR-22: 2 stns
MFSK-22: 0 stns

Solid path to some stations was offset by marginal path to others. Our antenna problem delayed Early Ck-In and we missed net start by 5min. That too is unusual. Once we got back on track, the net unfolded smoothly. Thanks for your patience.

We rescheduled the Path Evaluation Macro transmissions prior to Comments tonight because one of our senders wasn’t copying NCS. We’ll do it next session. We also rescheduled the upcoming off-net-frequency demonstration for June. More on that later.

Hats-Off to April W7ANC for mastering the NBEMS Exercise and her progress with CW. After working CW Academy, she recently made two CW contacts! That’s a big accomplishment. CW takes more patience and practice than other Amateur Radio modes. Focus and perseverance are essential.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG ICS-213 form. Remember, our NBEMS Exercises similate traffic-handling routines common to Traffic and Emergency nets. The questions similate message content adding realism to practice. Questions are occasionally relevant to digital traffic-handling. When they’re not, they may help developing greater depth with NBEMS software.

Summer is unfolding like previous Summers. Rosters usually diminish in early Summer. People are enjoying better WX, doing spring/summer chores, vacationing, etc. We’ve rescheduled the off-net-freq demonstration for next month. We’re busy too. Ïgzou¥ tugvornebx

Nice exercise Doug. Much better than my ck-in ;-)
Good on-the-fly change of modes due to condx.

Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
PSK-250R: 1 stn
THOR-50×1: 2 stns
THOR-22: 2 stns
MFSK-22: 0 stns

BK
I goofed and didn’t have our antennas switched correctly during ck-in. Doug got it sorted out! Band is still
very poor. Tnx for everyone’s patience. Tnx to Ken KR7KR & Dennis W6DLW for calling. We’ll reschedule their
Path Evaluation macros for another evening.

Considering the rough condx I decided to stick to MFSK32 for tonights exercise file. Condx was almost useless early on, but as usual improved as the sun dipped.

Finally fantastic weather! I actually took my largest snake out to the park today, where I hung out and talked with a local ham (KN6ONO). He enjoyed the sun very much :). You can see him at https://m42.pw/u/R

Speaking of which, I would like to share a URL shortner I made specifically for ham use: https://shorturl.m42.pw/ it will work reguardless of case sensativity so good for putting links in things like JS8, or CW.

Band not good tonight and I raised each end of my dipole to 15 ft from 10 ft. My SWR is 0 now at 3.581
However NCS was still in and out. The exercise I was still misisng blocks 8 and 9 but did the best on

did great to stick through the routine and reach everyone on the exercise. WA7HHE was the only 100% flamp.

Been really crazy trying to keep up with appts, phone calls and a
local emergency past week. My friend suffered a house fire over the
weekend, this AM I helped him by watching his stuff as he and friends
brought it out of the burned building. I wish him & his daughter
quick luck securing a new residence!

I’ve started two new meds, both seem to have both positive and negative
affects on me. Hope over time the negative stuff abates.

I see quite a bit of signal fading WRT NCS at beginning of net. Yup,
summer-time cndx are here again :| Working with these cndx is fantastic
training.

An interesting FACT: Those stations who are not transmitting on NCS’s
frequency are both harder to copy and their S/N numbers fall dramatically
lower than on frequency signals. I think NCS should report WHERE on
the WF a station’s signal is Rcvd by NCS.

Just realized I addressed the net as WDN, OOPS! Should have read “ORCA DN” :)

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA < K7KY Wow! Tough band condx tonite. We made it a bit worse by miss setting our antenna switches. No wonder most stations couldn’t hear us. Somehow, a few did hear us leading us to think it was unusually poor band condx. When we decided to switch antennas, we discovered the problem. Some copied us from the 10′ coax shield (-: Both stations were difficult to tune; no wonder.

It isn’t often we’re unable to Fill the NBEMS Exercise for everyone. Jaye’s point about being right on frequency is more important in poor band condx. MFSK won’t tolerate much mis-tuning. 16hz is about it’s limit in good condx.

Macro Tags containing ‘@’ are executed FIFO after TX ends. Tonight was a learning experience here @ NCS. < Doug K7KY

K7KY de KE6SLS TU Doug. I am monitoring, will talk w/u after net.\\

April, this was a TWO PART exercise, one was filling out the ICS213 in FLMSG, the second
part was then ADDING that file into FLAMP to transmit to NCS, so you are HALF WAY THERE. Good
job, and we’ll talk about your signal tomorrow ..

Doug, also, you did miss Howard, KB6NN was chkn in to be part of after session session.
