Another interesting net. My second net in a row with PC/kbd woes. I have some serious troubleshooting to do. Some key or key combination sets off the Announcement macro instantly. It happened numerous times tonight. Yuck! Another key combo makes my screen go totally white for a second. Like an explosion, then all normal again except me. I’m rattled. Yet another mystery key opens the terminal window. All very distracting. All this hassle has awakened me to the importance of digital keyboarding. I’m probably the best example of hasty typing and correcting. Smooth and accurate typing is an important digital skill. We’ve not emphasized this on the net.

Timely and coherent typing is important to handling digital traffic. You will usually be keyboarding with your partners to send and receive traffic. Similar to CW, we strive for clear and concise exchanges. I think we do well. QSO’s are different. There’s time to be more expressive. I head the lineup for typing practice. I do most of the net typing and have lots of room for improvement. Jaye KE6SLS is a good example of brisk and accurate.

Nice to have Brad WA7HHE and Gene KF7VWT join us from UT. Both had solid signals. David NX6D was back after a few months off. He always has a great signal. David noticed the changes in the net. Much has changed over winter; all to the good, I think.

Did you notice Ken K7IFG and John NX6DX printing their ID on the waterfall? It makes my job easier. I can see stations that want in while I’m listening to another station on 1500wf. The wfID macro is explained at the website macro page. Give it a spin.

Our FLAMP REPORT routine is working well. It take a little time for new members to catch the flow, but most have acclimated quickly . Many Ops new to ORCA are already familiar with FLAMP and synchronize with the net quickly. Really, it’s a treat working with all of you. Learning all the intricacies of digital communication is challenging; putting it all together to work seamlessly with others is the polish on the apple, so to speak. It’s the art of digital communications and it’s inspiring when it flows smoothly as it did tonight. Impressive digital networking.

Unintentionally, we are bucking a general trend in Amateur digital nets with every check-in sending practice traffic or keyboarding in rotation. It makes the net protocol more complex and requires more focus and attention. An emergency digital net would be similar with the exception of roundtable traffic. Formal traffic would pass between two stations off net freq and the overall thru-put would be greater and more efficient. Hopefully, practice on ORCA will lead to the skills you want for digital QSOs and nets. If an emergency brings NCS to your keyboard, you’ll be ready.

If you haven’t already, please review the double-reducing tips from Ken K7IFG and Bob W7GBB about using a 1.5sec tuning tone just prior to transmitting. It’s most useful sent briefly from a macro, enabling you to quickly determine if another stations is transmitting before you send. If we all do this it will definitely reduce doubles. If you a send 1.5sec tone by macro, don’t enable pre-TX tone on the Config tab. No need to send the tone twice. We’ll demonstrate this concept next net.

Next net, Don WA6NBG will wait at our old freq for any Ops that didn’t get the word. I hope to have the website updated by then too. Most of my website files are stuck on the old XP machine right now.

Thanks to everyone who came out to work with us tonight. It was a good net and I enjoyed working with you. Hope to see you again next week. 73 Doug K7KY

groups will continue with traffic and comment rounds. Groups
will conclude independantly.

No practice message? Send the ORCA image (available for

Ops to evaluate signals and band condx. It only takes about 50sec.

Checking in late? Send your CALLSIGN during a lull or print it

ORCA Not sure what this time is for, but ……………….. Looking like I have 100% cp on all stations tonight. I’m slowly learning HOW to participate. Finally got flamp able to send a report. Woo hoo. Looking forward to learning this more so i can be somewhat proficient. Tnx de nX6Dx.

NX6DX No problem John we’re just finishing the traffic round where you can send messages in flmsg or keyboard as you just did. Next will be the comment round where we send reception reports and general comments… OK lets begin the comment round with Don WA6NBG < K7KY

nice net tonight. I am now getting either QRM or QRN. Hard to tell. sounds like someone is blowing into a mic here. But it has NO
effect at all on
the signal decode here. Wow, just a great spot on the dial here Doug and all. I think we have a winner in this one. I hope others
were able to find us.
had great copy on all stations. I had to stop in middel of stuff and do some
business and whn I came back, had issues on the computer which I booted as a mean operator that I am. Now have alll up and
running. Really enjoyed seeing
the signal reports from all the users. We have a good spot here for sure.

I have traffic that I think is very important to all new users .. I’ll send it following the wrap on this net. So anyone interested, pls stick around. I’ll also be bumping up the mode to a little faster mode on MFSK so it don’t take too long.

TU Doug and that is my repo9rt from Eureka! .

Variable signals this evening, but generally 100% print for all except
Mindy, Jaye, Don, and David, who are rather weak here in Los Angeles this evening.
Strongest signals came from:
Doug at 4-10 dB,
Gene at 2-5 dB,
Ken at 0 dB, and
Bob at 0 dB.

I think this is a great frequency for the net.

Sending your Flmsg files using Flamp will possibly cure the Ck-sum problems
give it a try next week.

Hopefully, Doug, your kbd issues will subside with continued use.

well I guess this does it for another week. Hopefully Mindy will get her antenna woes taken care of. They usually are fairly easy to
fix.

Dave NX6D, I remember you checking me in to a 40-mtr voice net and I didn’t catch what you said about the similarity of our calls till much later. I was born blond you see. Any way have a great nite all

NX6DX TU John Mindy & I are both transitioning to Linux from WinXPpro and it’s not all been easy, but we have an ace in the hole iwith Jaye KE6SLS who really knows Linux. TU Jaye…! Tonight has has a few goofs and lots of mistakes with my kbd.. something is setting off the Announcement macro and driving me crazy

Thanks to all the great digital Ops who showed up tonight to work with us.. you really have done a super job… it take a good bit of concentration to work this net I don’t like the nets to run too long and bore everyone, but it’s improtant to let everyone send traffic, i think decoding is easy… any more business before we close? and remember Jaye has a traffic after closing and if you want to fill Brad’s WA7HHE message we can do that also afte closing… anythging further for the net? < K7KY

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
