Thanks for checking into ORCA on Summer Sked. We’re staying connected and enjoying Summer 2021. Long days and solar cycle minimums are limiting our Rosters; 25 stations tonight. You’ve probably noticed how few distant stations make the Log these days. Stations beyond Idaho and Utah are DX. Steve WY7SJM in Casper,WY and our friends in Kansas and Missouri are fortunate to connect; they usually need a relay.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Mauro AG7BI in Kingston,WA. As usual, we asked him to monitor a few sessions. We later realized that monitoring a few sessions isn’t necessary to ck-in and participate in the Comment Round. Without the weekly NBEMS Exercise, ORCA is as simple as all Directed digital nets. First-time Ops are welcome to ck-in and participate in the Comment Round.

We’ve renamed the weekly FLAMP Exercise to NBEMS Exercise. FLAMP is an important NBEMS app, but isn’t always needed. When RX stations decode files 100% in FLDIGI, FLAMP is not indicated; file transfers would require more time and energy. It’s important to practice traffic-handling with FLAMP, and remember that it’s just one of numerous NBEMS tools.

After Summer Sked, we’ll return to working with image transfers as we did a few years ago. We experimented and practiced with images; maps can convey information at a glance, saving long verbal descriptions. Simple black/white maps don’t take half the transmit time of color maps. When condx support image transfer, we can pass a lot of information with one file.

When we return to normal net operations, we’ll expand the weekly NBEMS Exercise to other aspects of digital traffic-handling like image transfer, relays, Mode Shoot-Outs, etc. We’d like to hear your thoughts and suggestions regarding practice routines and net operations in general. ORCA ‘belongs’ to all of us. We’d be history without your participation and support.

Remember that digital modes are ideal for low power communications. QSO are perfect for finding the minimum power necessary for 100% decoding. It only takes a few minutes of back’n forth to find the minimum power for 100% decoding. Our power setting should never be ‘set & forget’. Some digital modes will decode signals too weak to hear or see on the waterfall. Develop the habit of using minimum power and you’ll be well poised for the loss of grid power in emergency operations when power-conservation keeps you in the network.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ORCA DIGITAL NET is in Summer Sked, Ck-In and Comment Round only until 18/Sep/21. We’ll continue sending the test image at both ends of the net. Signal reports are always useful.

Ck-In protocol is unchanged for Summer Sessions.

‘CALLSIGN QNX’ to check in&out (Monitor)
‘CALLSIGN, NAME, QTH, [QNX]’ First Ck-In

The potential for wildfires is very high again this Summer. Here’s an opportunity to recognize the men and women that fight wildfires. WILDFIRE HEROES is holding an ‘Official Wildfire Heroes Special Event Station’ this weekend, callsign W7ETB. See their website for details: https://wildfireheroes.com/ Saturday & Sunday, July 17 & 18. The SES will be ‘operating from deep within the Rogue-Siskiyou National Forest’ on 2M FM, 146.52, and mid-General band, 75, 40, & 10m SSB only (10m operations in Tech band).

We’ve been running ORCA with Panasonic CF-C2 Toughbook Tablets w/Win8.1 for a few years now. Yesterday, we began the transition to Linux Mint 20.2. We’ve been wanting to install Linux on these Tablets, but previous Linux installs haven’t supported the CF-C2 touchscreen. Now, the touchscreen works correctly at install. We still only have audio in headphones and haven’t yet tried installing the FLDIGI suite. Wish us well; the change from Windows to Linux can be daunting (we’re a little light in Linux experience), but ending the data grab by Microsoft and incessant security breaches is worth the bother.

Over to Brad WA7HHE 4 Comments < W7ZAP

ORCA < WA7HHE, Recently visited with my RN daughter, she brought this to my attention the affect of the pandemic on nurses.

The stress came to a head in late 2020 when a Covid-19 patient she “just adored, the sweetest guy,” begged her to try any treatments that could save him. But they’d tried everything. She had no hope to give him. There was no dignifying his death. After months of debating the decision, she finally quit her job in January. “It broke me,” she said. “It was just too much.” Almost a year into the Covid-19 pandemic, America’s nurses — who for almost 20 years have been voted the country’s most trusted professionals — are running on empty. They’ve reused PPE, canceled PTO and worked extended shifts for employers they don’t always feel value their safety. The stress and lack of support has driven many nurses to quit their jobs. And during the worst health crisis the US has seen in more than a century, the health care system can’t afford to lose them.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/25/us/nurses-quit-hospitals-covid-pandemic-trnd/index.html

Very sad to hear… hope she heals from the toll & stress of it all.

W7ZAP < K6ETA Looking forward to temps in the 80’s we’ve been between 95 – 100 for nearly a month and ‘normal’ temps would be in the 80’s here.

Looks like we will have that for Thurs-Sat and then it heats up again. Silver lining: at 4,000 feet it does cool off into the 50’s late at night, so at least we can keep the house cool.

Thanks agn for another great Net and I do look forward to propagation improvements as the days get shorter – but so far so good on copying most staions these days!

k7ky, will, I won’t get to hear him until this report “airs” :)

Another day with approx 1 hour of sun, otherwise, under what seems to be a perpetual marine layer!

The HEX beam went up last Wednesday. Have been extremely pleased by the performance. Didn’t shut off the radio until 1am following morning! Since then, made 6m CW contacts, 10m ssb, and lot’s of VK’s on 20m. Looking forward to figuring out the propagation in an attempt to work Europe.

I was able to work Bruce kb7vx on 20m Thursday eve following the WDN. That was pretty cool!

Tonight, on the Western Country Cousin’s net (3.970) at 9pm will be the swearing in of new officers. My hat somehow got tossed into the ring. All are invited to listen in, and check in and enjoy a virtual BBQ with us. Bring your favorite snack and beverage of choice!

Last night the normal NCS for Eureka VHF wasn’t available. Out of all the hams in Eureka, not a single ham was willing to pick up the net :( I honestly don’t understand the refusal of hams to be NCS.

I am SO invious of Steve’s new QTH and antennas. Oh how wonderful it would be to have quiet conditions! :)

Have new high band rig for digital NBEMS work. Have it connected but need to wrap my head around ICOM again! Looking forward to doing it all using the Pi3.

Stay safe guys. As always, great seeing/hearing you on the wf!
