When 80m is termed, ‘Very Quiet’, it usually means we’ll have difficulty with distant stations. Tonight, it wasn’t so. Propagation was OK for digital modes. Keith WA0TJT ck-ed in with VidID from Kansas City,MO. We CONFIRMED all eight stations in the FLAMP Exercise. PSK-250R didn’t cut it, but THOR-50×1 and MFSK-32 filled every station. Bruce KB7VX relayed the third pass in MFSK-32 from his field station in the California desert, CONFIRMING the final four stations.

It was good to have Gene W1EEP in the FLAMP Exercise tonight. His distance from NCS makes him harder to fill; we like to fill Gene by relay when we can. It’s a great opportunity to practice with FLAMP’s Relay feature. Dave K7DV is the other distant station important to the FLAMP Exercise. Being harder to fill they make opportunities for other Ops to CONFIRM them with FLAMP Relay. Gene and Dave have strong signals; it’s distance and condx that make them harder to fill and useful for the Exercise. Without hurdles, we wouldn’t learn the more difficult tasks.

Solar Minimum highlights the importance of Relay practice. Relays are crucial to traffic-handling in difficult condx. At NCS, we’re always observing/assessing signals. We have a general impression for each member station and an idea of how they will do in current condx. It helps us select the best Relay for the moment. You probably have your own internal database of ORCA station signals. If not, give it some thought. There’s much more to learn here than meets the casual eye, or is outlined on the website.

Thanks for your replies to the FLAMP OPTIONAL Exercise question. We asked this question because it isn’t easy to generate interesting or useful questions every week. The questions are not the point of the Exercise anyway, they’re simply representing real Traffic for practice. Some weeks, we can’t conjour a relevant question.

Jaye KE6SLS suggests asking about member’s occupation and what attracted them to Amateur Radio. We’ve shied away from personal info unrelated to radio because ORCA logs are published on the web. Some may feel comfortable with personal information on the air, but not permanently available on the web. Jaye’s suggestions are not too personal. More personal information is often presented in the Comment Round by choice. We are always interested in the lives of our radio friends and would welcome knowing more about them. As always, there’s no need to answer the OPTIONAL question. It’s primarily simulating traffic for NBEMS practice.

We really appreciate your ongoing participation and support. Band condx are tough these days; it takes a little extra effort and patience to work in these condx. Consider the Phone net Ops working in these condx. Even with competent Relay stations, they’re struggling. Remember our associate, Western Digital Net on Thursday evening, same freq/time/mode as ORCA. SATERN Int’l is another net we want to support. SATERN is an opportunity to practice NBEMS traffic-handling, daytime on 20m. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening for another round of digital traffic-handling practice.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex177.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the
Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Before each FLAMP Exercise, we send the three Modes we’ll be using. With this knowledge
you can be ready to set mode manually should FLDIGI miss the RSID signal. You can also
be ready to relay these modes by locating them in the ‘Op Mode’ menu.

Net participation is following the usual pattern of smaller Rosters in Spring and Summer.
Couple that with Solar Minimum and Daylight Saving Time. Spring and Summer open the
door to home projects and recreational opportunities. It’s still light at 2100. Still enough
daylight for smaller tasks. Solar Minimum makes working the net more difficult and often
impossible for some. Hang in there; it’s going to be slow, but band condx should begin to
improve shortly.

Hat’s Off to Brad WA7HHE and Bruce KB7VX for acting as NCS for the WDN Comment Round.
Both accepted the invitation w/o preparation and did very well. It’s actually as easy as it
appears. Simply call each Active station on the Roster, make comments as you like, and return
the net to NCS when the round is over. Not everyone aspires to NCS duties, but learning
simple routines like this one enables you to assist NCS in time of need.

Thanks Again for emailing Test images for the Net Report: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Net Report posted soon: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

NCS < K6ETA Many thanks to Doug K7KY, Brad WA7HHE and Bruce KB7VX for taking the WDN last Thursday as I was driving to Redding. It was just as well as the family

didn’t want me playing radio up there and, well, it’s not my house (yet).

It’s great to see others try their hand at NCS. To that end I have created simplified instructions for anyone else who would like to try NCS on the WDN or on their own

net!

For easy directions, see:
westerndigitalnet.org/ncs

Folks are always welcomed to give it a try, even if you only want to run Comments or take Early Check-Ins… the practice could come in handy if there’s ever a need!

I hope Jaye KE6SLS is not missing his tools too much, but I know what it’s like to sell everything that isn’t bolted down when the times are lean! Heal up fast Jaye!

Bruce I hope they have some new masks on the way – hang in there! Also I will help u with JS8CALL k6eta@comcast.net

Long Live ORCA!

poor report due to multitasking

Having a bugger of a time hearing our ORCA ops. Huge noise here, over s9, sounds like a water fall and hurricane rolled into one!! Exercise, what I’d like to know

about ORCA ops: What do you/did you do for work. What got you into ham radio?

Sunny and warm day here today. Beats the marine layer that wouldn’t let go yesterday. Batteries 100%. Also participating in our HARC ON THE AIR meeting as net goes

on. Hopefully I don’t flub up either net!

Yesterday a parcel arrived here in the mail. No idea what it was. Once opened, I discovered many packages of home grown pepperoni and salami a fellow ham shipped to

me from Bacona Oregon! The critters were raised on their family farm. Now trying to find neighbors that can help me enjoy it. What a wonderful gift, Thank you Eric

The radiologist said I was “killing him” with all the ultrasound cases I did today, so earning my keep here. Been struggling to learn how to use FSQ Call and JS8 Call.
We have never used those modes here on ORCA. Full moon on the desert at night is kind of like daylight. Weird people out last night around me on dirt bikes. They

builT three campfires about half mile away at about 11 PM, stayed out there for a long time. Then, some desert bird or bat was scratching around on top of my camper

last night. Didn’t get much good sleep last night. Long live ORCA AND WDN.
I finally got an ACK from a radiogram.

I’m always impressed with the strength of digital modes. Tonight is a good example of how well they deal with QRN/QRM. We copied a number of stations perfectly thru

ongoing tune signals and wide modes. MFSK-32 continued to print perfectly.

Reply to Ken KR7KR’s question: We’ve not completed an Inverted-L. The anchor point was on a limb of the neighbor’s tree overhanging our propterty. The house was sold.

New owner is not yet friendly. We may need to pick another site (-:

Long live ORCA & WDN! Remember to ck-in with Steve K6ETA @ Western Digital Net on Thursday evening. Same time, same frequency, same mode as ORCA. You don’t need

Traffic to work WDN. The Comment Round is always interesting. CU There…

We don’t use the mode Bruce is interested as they’re not mode included in the NBEMS apps Doug K7KY
