Thanks to everyone who checked in tonight. 29 stations on the Roster. Last week we logged 25. That’s an immediate uptick for Summer Sked. Seems we all needed a break from traffic-handling practice. Staying active on ORCA and WDN will keep us lightly in touch; we’ll be ready if our EMCOMM skills are needed. Meantime, we’ll enjoy what we can of our Summer like no other.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes two first-time ck-ins, Ron AD7DQ in Horseshoe Bend,ID and Steven KE7ZPG in McKinleyvile,CA. We hope they find ORCA useful enough to check in regularly. They will also find our Associate, Western Digital Net, engaging and useful. WDN meets every Thursday evening on the same sked as ORCA, 3.581khz, 1930p/0230z, Steve K6ETA/NCS.

Extreme heat in Vancouver,WA last week put our friend Charles W7CLE in the hospital. He’s now out of the hospital and half-way home in a care facility. Under quarantine, Brian KJ7BHK is his only visitor. Charles, an ORCA regular, has been with us since 21/Nov/2017. Thanks to Charles, we now have numerous members in Vancouver where they run a VHF digital training net. We wish Charles a quick recovery and return home. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He couldn’t have a better group of friends and colleagues wishing him well.

Steve K6ETA has spearheaded our efforts to resolve VARA QRM on 3.581mhz. He’s communicating directly with principle Operators. Some have thanked him for bringing the issue to their attention. He asked John Wiseman G8BPQ to add a frequency-reporting feature to the BPQ software because BPQ auto-forwards over VARA and ARDOP ports. Those ports might be forwarding to Winlink, NTSD, or another BPQ BBS. John added this BPQ feature directly; now there’s a log of each stations TX frequency. This will help the group self-regulate. Hats-Off to Steve; he’s our most knowledgeable Op about Winlink/BPQ operations. He’s lead the way with polite and reasonable communications.

Some of those experimenting with ultra-wide modes may be newer Amateur Ops, computer savvy, but still unfamiliar with Amateur radio protocols and conventions. They may not realize their nearly 3khz signal is covering other stations. We need to continue listening for the CW ID on interfering VARA signals and contact the independent Ops ourselves when we can. So far, we’ve had very good responses from VARA stations we’ve contacted. If you copy an interfering ID, please follow up with the Op. They are probably unaware of interfering.

Tonight’s signal-evaluation images reveal the difficulty some stations had copying NCS at ck-in. Most showed improvement by net-end. Some stations were unable to copy the first image at all. Note that we’ve logged few-to-none of our more distant members for the last couple months. They’ll be looking forward to fall and shorter days when 80m will wake up earlier in the evening (we hope). Years ago, we experimented with switching to 40m when 80m was difficult, but we found 40m only a partial solution. It was often no better than 80m and sometimes worse. Now, we stay on 80m and do the best we can with what we have. That’s radio; in emergencies, we’ll use the band that works.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ORCA DIGITAL NET continues with Summer Sked, Ck-In and Comment Round only until 18/Sep/21. We’re open to running occasional FLAMP Exercises or Mode Shoot-Outs if enough members request. Please continue checking-in to participate in the Comment Round or QNX (in&out). It’s important to maintain our Tuesday evenings sked. There are three other digital nets on 3.581, M-Thurs. Currently, our frequency is under siege by a varity of stations using very wide VARA modes. 3.581 could easily become unusable if this continues.

Speaking of VARA QRM, we want to mention Steve K6ETA’s current efforts to assess and resolve this growing problem. Steve is a six year veteran RMS Gateway Sysop and knows the Winlink system, FCC regulations, and Winlink Gateway conventions better than most of us. Steve asked John Wiseman G8BPQ, the BPQ Developer, to add a frequency-reporting feature to BPQ that will log station freq. John has already added this reporting function. Now, it’s possible to see reports with the frequency used by each station. This will go a long way toward getting all Sysops and BPQ Ops to remain within their allocation. When you run into Steve, be sure to thank him for proactively addressing the problem.

The VARA QRM issue metasized very quickly and would get worse if not addressed. It effects a lot more Ops than the four digital nets on 3.581. There’s also a large group of digital Ops using 3.582 +1500 regularly. That group includes some ORCA/WDN Ops. They’re even closer to the VARA stations.

We’ll continue sending the test image at both ends of the net. Signal reports are always useful.

Note to CALL* Ops: There’s no use for an * at Ck-In until 18/Sep/21 when FLAMP Exercises resume.

We can run an FLAMP Exercise or Mode Shoot-Out occasionally, that’s up to the membership.

Ck-In protocol is unchanged for Summer Sessions.
Please Send on one line:
‘CALLSIGN’ only for ck-in & Comment Round
‘CALLSIGN QNX’ to check in&out (Monitor)
‘CALLSIGN, NAME, QTH, [QNX]’ first Ck-In only

For email notice when the Net Report is posted, write: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

ORCA NCS< K7KY, I found this artile and thought I would share on the net. In a Memorandum Opinion and Order (MO&O) released June 17, the FCC denied a Petition for Reconsideration filed by Hobby King of a $2,861,128 fine for marketing noncompliant RF equipment and for failing to respond to FCC orders in its investigation of the company’s practices. In the same step, the FCC enforced its equipment marketing rules. The fine resulted from an FCC investigation initiated by ARRL’s January 2017 complaint that the Hobby King equipment was “blatantly illegal at multiple levels.” See the following URL for full story: http://www.arrl.org/news/fcc-reaffirms-nearly-3-million-fine-for-marketing-unauthorized-drone-transmitters. 73 to all. This evenings interesting article read is titled:
Cascading Disaster’ of Response and Failures

One would think we should be able to do better.

When the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the state’s grid operator, required the utility to cut power across San Antonio, massive pumps used to push water throughout the city shut down.

That worsened an already bad situation, with hundreds of thousands of San Antonians enduring freezing temperatures without power or water for long periods.

The only comment I have about correcting the VARA issue is I want to emphasize that we are all digital ops figuring out how to share limited bandwidh – solet’s keep it civil and couteous. In the end hopefully we will all learn and accept the rules and the band planning that allows us to do all this!

Thanks again and 73 de K6ETA BTN

After a 5 week period with no COVID patients, we are now starting to get a few. I did one patient’s ultrasound and was in his room for about 30 minutes scanning him.

He told me he had received the vaccine.

I will plan to send this new AIB myself as QST to WDN on Thursday from my secret hideout on top of a hill at 7500 feet elevation in the Cibola National Forest. I may check in late due to poor propagation on 3581 before sunset. CU there! de KB7VX/p.
