Welcome to Winter on 80m. The band is going long quickly. Winter favors our most distant members at the expense of those nearby. It’s a good thing we’re Relay agile.

ORCA DIGITAL NET welcomes Monte VE6AYU in Magrath,AB. We’ll ask him to review the Quick-Start section of our website: http://orcadigitalnet.com. Check out our mainpage map. Monte is our furthest Northern station in Magrath,AB. We don’t have many Canadian stations.

The NBEMS Exercise question provided useful information about members’ antennas. You can collect this information easily from your hard-drive, …/FL_APS/NBEMS.files/FLAMP/rx/. Reception Reports are more useful when we know more about net-stations.

With 29 Ops on the log and a 14min late start, we still wrapped the net by 0330z. Thanks for working the net consciously. We waste very little time. Our nets flow efficiently because everyone follows net protocols and conventions. Hats-Off to each of you for persistence, focus, and attention to detail.

TxID yet again. If you’re still working ORCA w/TxID always-on, Please disable it. We’re a training net; it’s important to practice correctly.

ORCA DIGITAL NET has two affiliate nets on 3.581 with similar operating Conventions and Protocols. They’re solid examples of efficient digital networking. They’ll appreciate your participation and support.

Monday: Humboldt County Emergency Digital Net (Emergency), 1845p/0245z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, KE6SLS/NCS (regional)

Tuesday:  ORCA DIGITAL NET (Training), 1930p/0230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, K7KY & W7ZAP/NCS, http://orcadigitalnet.com/ (W/US)

Thursday:  Western Digital Net (Traffic), 1930p/0230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, K6ETA, KE6SLS, KJ7VGV NCS. http://westerndigitalnet.org (W/US)

Thanks for taking time to practice with us again tonight. We appreciate your participation and support. Without you, we wouldn’t be a net. We hope to work w/you again next Tuesday evening.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise, conducted by Bruno KG7VVN,  features FLMSG ICS-213. We’re interested in your antenna, it’s orientation, and your usual ORCA power setting. Antennas are the most significant station component. Antenna information makes signal reports more useful. We don’t have a data-base for info like this; we’ll store it in collective memory. NBEMS Exercise questions mostly simulate message content, but occasionally, they’re relevant and useful.

Last week’s NBEMS Exercise instructions didn’t work well for most stations. Only Jaye KE6SLS managed to complete them. Now, a couple points are clear. For some, the word Preamble was unfamiliar. Without that knowledge, they had no reference point in the RX buffer. Unlike ‘ANNOUNCEMENTS’, the Preamble doesn’t begin with ‘Preamble’. ‘ANNOUNDEMENTS’ clearly marks the beginning of ANNUNCEMENTS and we’ve had no problems locating the correct section. The Exercise file-name was listed as 284 & 285, confusing, but manageable if you recall last weeks file#. We always try to write instructions clearly and concisely, but occasionally we miss the
mark. Our objective is understanding and implementing instructions despite errors, as best we can. In stressful situations, instructions may be less than ideal.

Last session, we transmitted the Postamble(closing text) and TESTimage @ 5w with surprising results.  A number of stations copied the text 100%. Even @ 5w, the TESTimage is recognizable. Some that didn’t print text, copied a recognizable image. We’ll experiment more with low power this Winter.

What’s happening with our close affiliate, Western Digital Net? It’s been without a regular Net Control Station for a year or so. Steve K6ETA, WDN founder and owner, Jaye KE6SLS, and Don KJ7VGV are the only Ops keeping the lights on. They still have no regular schedule; the net is often w/o NCS until net time and check-ins are diminishing as we head into Winter. Net participation usually increases in Winter.

WDN isn’t difficult to run; with a little OJT, you’ll be up and running. Note how quickly Don has come up to speed. He developed his own Macros and his nets run as smoothly as his partners. If you don’t have a humongous signal, don’t worry, we’re already good at Relays.

Macros are fundamental for digital Net Control Stations. There are three WDN/NCS Ops with WDN Macro sets. You can use their Macros or alter them to suit yourself. Anyone willing to help will enjoy solid support. WDN, our only West Coast digital Traffic net may be just what’s needed in the near future. It would be a major loss to have it go dark. If you can help run WDN, please join Steve, Jaye, and Don. Your colleagues will appreciate and support you.

ORCA < de WB7EUX – Happy Holidays to all. Most stations were strong and decodable tonight. And, as usual, I forgot to change the Send to field! Thanks for the exercise. I activated a 10m beacon three nights ago. I have a custom built 10 watt transmitter operating at 28.202 24/7. The transmitter was built by Vlad, AA7DJ. Until I can construct a quarter wave vertical in the pasture this spring I’ll use my existing 43 foot vertical. So far the transmissions are showing up in the Reverse Beacon Network from around the country and down to Costa Rica. All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

Lots of rain last weekend in Reno and another round of heavy snow this weekend in the Sierras. Tnx for doing the net. It takes a lot of work to put it together. Bruno KG7VVN good job buddy. Everyone stay warm.

Copied all OPs 100% Also everyone confirmed on 2nd pass with no 3rd pass it was rough to be first out Brad.
