*Stations called for COMMENTS only

Thanks for the orderly ck-in. We really appreciate it. Thanks to your focus and attention, Mindy W7ZAP checked in 37 stations last week w/o a bobble. Tonight’s ck-in was orderly too; remarkable in such difficult band condx. It’s hard to avoid doubling stations you don’t copy. When you can’t copy NCS, wait for the ck-in Relay after the Preamble. Transmitting blind will almost certainly double someone during ck-in. There may be times you can’t work the net. That’s HF radio.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes two new stations, James KM6MO in Bakersfield,CA and Richard KN6RK in Eureka,CA. We’ll ask them to ck-in QNX long enough to learn ORCA protocol and conventions. It’s always a pleasure to Welcome new stations. As our Roster increases, Monitoring becomes more important. The FLAMP Exercise is our central event every session. It incorporates most of the NBEMS tools and tactics necessary for handling digital traffic. We limit Exercise participation to keep sessions from running too long. It takes a 1.5+hrs net to accommodate ten Active stations. That’s a long time to remain focused on net flow.

To limit our sessions to reasonable length, we’ll lower FLAMP Exercise participation to eight stations. Everyone else can work the Exercise silently, w/o NCS interaction. Stations that work the Exercise silently can CONFIRM or FILL files in the brief Monitor’s session after every net.

Tonight’s Exercise question was a bit tricky. It asked for the first sentence in the 2nd Announcement paragraph. Both stations that completed the Exercise got it mostly right. The instructions called for the first sentence, ‘Happy New Year!’.

FLAMP Exercise:
Have FLAMP open. Stay focused.
Exercise is interactive and brisk.

Traffic Round: NCS calls stations in rotation. No
practice traffic? Send ‘QRU’. All traffic is sent
to NCS; only NCS REPORTS/FILLS. NCS will fill
Traffic Round messages after net on request.

Comment Round: RX reports, observations, questions,
comments (keyboard or FLMSG BLANK Form as you like)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex203.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the
Traffic round with FLAMP.

Happy New Year! We hope for better band condx this year and an improvement in social/political
harmony. And, Happy Anniversary to the ORCA DIGITAL NET Team! ORCA is 8yrs old this month;
over 1000 digital Ops have checked into ORCA in 8yrs. More remarkable, some Ops have been with
us since the very beginning.

When we split from ORCA EMERGENCY NET, we intended to focus on handling emergency traffic.
Soon, we realized we knew little about handling emergency digital traffic and even less about
managing digital nets. We quickly changed our name to ORCA DIGITAL NET; we were not yet ready
to handle emergency traffic. Initially, we ran ck-in and the final Comment round by Phone. We
had too much QRM to work effectively. Soon, we simply applied ARRL’s Directed Net Protocols to
our sessions and no longer needed Phone to run efficient digital nets.

Another pivotal development was initiated by Ken K7IFG who had enabled Pre-Signal Tone
on the FLDIGI RsID Configuration tab. This feature sends an automatic tone just prior to
all transmissions. This Pre-Signal Tone warned others that he was about to transmit. This
eliminated some doubles and improved net operations.

We soon realized that Ken’s tactic was only a partial solution to digital doubles. It does provide
warning to other Ops, but gives the sender no option to withhold transmission when a signal is
present. It’s like honking your vehicle horn before speeding thru an intersection. You’ve warned
others of your intent, with no means of avoiding collision. A more effective Anti-Doubling tactic
is Pre-Toning manually. This is done easily with a brief activation of the TUNE button. Sending a
brief Tune signal sends a warning AND provides the opportunity to Stop, Look, & Listen before
sending; a simple and elegant tactic for avoiding avoidable doubles.

These two strategies changed the nature of digital nets from difficult to manage, to easily
managed by simple protocols implemented by skilled digital Ops. Today, our nets run smoothly
and we pack a lot of traffic-handling practice into every session.

8th Anniversary Special:
If you would like an ORCA DIGITAL NET decal, the same image we send twice each session, send
a SASE to: ORCA DIGITAL NET, 17029 Ferry Creek Heights, Brookings,OR 97415. These are vinyl
sun-safe decals for external surfaces. Manufacturer claims they can be applied to cups and glasses
too. Supply limited; first come, first served.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
(another file location & manipulation exercise)

Mindy & I wish you a safe and healthy New Year! Stay alert an focused, 2021 looks to be a year
like no other.

K7KY < K6ETA Tonight I’m in Shasta County (Redding) on a portable rig in 35 degrees with the field day setup.

It looks like this setup should be OK for WDN, so I will try to NCS Thursday. We don’t move in to our new house in Mt Shasta, CA (ironically in Siskiyou County) until the 15th, sigh.

ORCA Digital Net de ke6sls.

I was just finishing up with another ON THE AIR meeting with my ham club. No net signal reports tonight.

I did get a copy of the roster, but it was garbled. I hope the band gets better sooner than later. yesterday, the band was the worst I’ve noted in nearly 30 years as a ham, and I confirmed today, with even more “long in the tooth” hams that yes, yesterday was one of the worst bands EVER. I even resorted to 160M. The band also had gone crazy long, I could be heard in AZ, Canada, Montana, but not in CALIFORNIA! go figure! I even dipped down to the broadcast AM band, and that too had taking the LONG path.

Very interesting, you could spend a life time studing what we use day to day, trying to figure out paths and propogatioin!

Sure glad to see so many signals. Stay warm, Stay dry. Stay “trucked” in Bruces situation!

I just received word today from the director of imaging that I will be the ONLY ultrasound tech for the next 14 days and that I will have to cover emergency call by myself for that entire period. The other ultrasound tech has a family emergency in TX. This makes it impossible for me to be on ANY nets, so this will be my last transmission for two weeks, hopefully no longer.

I have recovered from my fall on the ice and have been riding my bicycle to work this week — 22 degrees F this morning on the UNM billboard, so it is warming up! I hope this is a trend.

I just received the latest AmRRON Intelligence Brief this evening via K0FUB who is NCS for the eastern / central AmRRON training net. I can pass it after net for WDN.

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
