Very nice to have the band easing up a bit. Condx were better than the last two months. They’ve been so bad some nearby stations were preparing to take a holiday until usable condx returned. The FLAMP exercise went well in MFSK-64. We completed the message to all stations easily. Thanks to Larry N7SND for relaying fills.

The Humboldt County,CA Ops were at ARC meetings tonight and Doug KA7FOO will be off-net for about 12 weeks while he teaches another EMCOMM class. Mindy & I are about to begin a VHF version of ORCA for local Ops. Our net will alternate every other week with a voice Network Training Net. We plan for a lighter version of ORCA HF, focused for new digital Ops.

The FLAMP exercise distributed a macro that relays the check-in message for NCS. Next week we’ll test those you’ve installed. Now we can more easily relay the check-in message and we’ve increased the opportunity for relay practice. Relays are important to the weekly FLAMP exercise. We’re using relays more often these days.

I was a bit hasty announcing the new interactive maps for the Net Reports. Mindy also created a mainpage map with all the stations that checked-in in the last three years. Although it was working perfectly in our browsers, we see it’s not working correctly in all. It should be sorted out soon.

January 2018. I once heard the world was ending in 2011, but no. January marks ORCA’s 5th year. Of the six founders, two are Silent Keys, two are not active on HF, and Mindy & I are still active and enthused. I hope ORCA continues as long as it fulfills the interest of it’s members. We throughly enjoy working the net with you and we’ve become much better digital Ops in the process. Haven’t we all? I hope the VHF version works as well as the HF Net.

Clifford N0LKC checked in Portable/12w from a campground near Quartzsite,AZ. He suggested trying 160m sometime; he can arrange his portable antenna for the Top Band. Jaye KE6SLS, Doug KA7FOO, and Pat KA7PAT also want to try it. We’re thinking of 2000p/0400z, day to be determined. If you’re interested too, drop me an email and I’ll keep you informed. Likely freq: 1.805mhz usb MFSK-32.

Here’s some images from the net. Jaye KE6SLS copied the two noisy images 20min before net. The clear image followed the Preamble.

Thanks for your patience and perseverance during difficult band condx. Frustrating as this can be, we’re becoming much better at working thru tough condx. We look forward to working with you again next week.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 02 January 2018

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘CK-INrelay.txt’, an
FLDIGI Macro. Paste the code into an unused macro button to easily
relay NCS’s check-in msg.

Reminder: In the weekly FLAMP exercise, the REPORT round is just for
REPORTS. Traffic Round is next. For FLAMP traffic sent to NCS, only
NCS REPORTS. Note who is the designated RX station. We overwrite
‘QST’ on the FLAMP TX tab so all stations know who the tfk is for.

FLAMP practice traffic to Net: all stations REPORT
Traffic to specific station: only that station REPORTS

You are welcome to send traffic in any mode you think band condx will
support. Enable TxID when changing mode.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

At the local level, an MOU serves two purposes. First, it’s a door opener.

The served agency says, in effect, that we have examined this organization of radio amateurs and have found them to be trustworthy and able to render substantial and needed services for our field operations in times of emergency.

Secondly, the Memorandum of Understanding spells out the capabilities and organization of the servers (the Amateur Radio operators), the organization and needs of the served agency, and the methods of operation.

KA7FOO < K7KY Doug ur up for Comments.. < NCS

Comments:
Good band conditions tonight, good copy on all stations.
Both images were received in good condition.

As per the Day-of-Week choice could be changed during
discussion time on the first session.

I will see if I can encourage one of the other Reno
station fill in for Reno area. They should be here
anyway!!! Talked to Dick (AG7RV) the other day
regarding a different HF Antenna, may help him in
this net.

for: 01/02/2018 20:32 PST

Thanks for committing your time and attention
to practicing digital traffic handling with us tonight.
We hope to work with you again next week.
73 Doug K7KY

KA7FOO < K7KY Doug we’l both miss you and wish you well with your teachingproject I’m wondering if in your training nets on VHF if you use any repeaters? < K7KY

Oh no repeaters. All in the somplex modes. We use 3 to 4 different frequecies during the nets of the last year. All in the VHF, i WOULD LIKE TO try a UHF freq some time for a text. Going thru the Express program at this moment. About another month I will be bringing this project to a close. Has taken 13 months. But I have developed some good operators and a team!
KA7FOO

KA7FOO < K7KY RR Doug Good on you 4 the Elmering we’re abt to begin a VHF digital training net hr in conjunction with a voice training net on simplex I’ve read that some groups in PA are using repeaters for their digital nets I’ve not tried this & don’t even know if it’s legal to do.. using a repeater would abt double our ck-ins I think just an idea I know nothing abt btu < K7KY

OH! Good for you. Simplex works and encourages relaying. If the NCS is on a hill you can cover a large area. I have not tried a repeater yet. But the 3 minute timer will be a challenge. Most of the or should say some of the xmit can bre longer than the 3 minute. I can rally the troops some night for a repater test in the near furthure. We ARES that is, have a repeater on a major mountain with a BIg footprint. Will keep you informed on that test.
KA7FOO

Tnx Doug that would be great… we ran a simplex VHF net hr abt 5yrs ago… so many baofungs and rubberducks made the relay feature the dominent mode of the net… it took forever… we hv lots of hills and shadows there’s lots of down sides to usning the repeater for digital modes I’m just doing my homework right now… tnx and I apprecitate u keeping me in mind tnx for that I hv toriun & check in with Pat KA7PAT keep in touch & enjoy your training sessions.. it very rewarding work 73 4 now BREAK KA7PAT < K7KY Pat ur hr? < K7KY

Before RSID: <<2018-01-03T04:45Z MFSK-32 @ 1504>>
K7KY < KA7PAT I don’t have to take your time now for macros … looks like you are working on 160 meters with a camper, that sounds interesting. What frequency so I can see if I can hear and maybe check in there … If I can type real time like you folks it seems like it would make it smoother on this end. The vhf digital training sounds interesting. I wonder if Craig might be up on that … I am sure we locally would love to do such.. i am getting really tired…

Pat… typing in to the hot TX buffer is your next challenge… most all digital work is done like that.. if we take time to compose & edit it ends up like we’re talkin btwn earth & mars (-: practice a bit with Craig or Mindy & I you should not be too concerned after watching my typing during the net.. I do hv a good excuse with a 2/3 finger on rt hand, but I can’t honestly say I was any better b4 anyway, the macro I sent has to be installed by u… just copy the code btwn the dotted lines and paste it into a blank macro or one u don’t use Label it ORCA RELAY or something like that I turn off my signalink to test things like this or turn off the rig andjust watch fldigi btu < K7KY

Dough, that sounds good … I shold not have a problem with doign that. < KA7PAT

KA7PAT < K7KY very good, Pat I think ur doing very well.. this is a complex net once you have the flow it’s easy and actually fun stay with it and you’ll be flowing with the pros soon this is how I learned the guy and ladies on this net are very savvy tnx for working with us Mindy & I hv been looking for digital Ops in the neighboring counties for a long time we’re glad to hv u aboard Nuts! my typing get worse as the night goes on… < K7KY

good question Pat… I was going to use 1.810 mostly because I go there for QRP CW I don’t think there’s much crowding on 160m and that was my thought… what u think? < K7KY

I have not use 160 digital yet, thought I would drop the question. Thanbks Doug, see you in the future.

KA7FOO < K7KY Sri Doug I got my Ops mixed by the end of net I’m not as sharp as at the beginning… I don’t think there will be any complaints on 160m the Stew Perry CW Challenge was last weekend and usually 160m is blank on my panadapter.. mostly CW and a few phone ragchews is all I usually see. btu < K7KY

OK Doug. Will start monitoring that freq to see how congested the freq is. Thanks for the net tonight.
