Tonight’s propagation was quite unique. Great at the beginning for most everyone, then the band went long and dropped stations to our north and southeast within 100-400 mile range. It looks like we had a direct pipeline to Gene W1EEP’s Pine Valley,UT antenna. His images look like the ones I receive when Doug is NCS and our antennas are only 70′ apart.  Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA went from P5 to P0 by net’s end, an hour later.

Here are a few comments we received via email following the net:

I think tonight’s image reports are going to tell the tail! The band OBVIOUSLY went long during the net. I had q5 on NCS when I departed, but the last FLmsg roster was garbled. But the final image is amazing. First image was P5 and last image was P0. Wow
Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka, CA

Greetings! The images say it all. I was In&Out, and I did copy the FLAMP exercise on its second transmission and two or three of the exercise responses in FLAMP, but after that almost everything faded. I was surprised to receive the second image at all.
John KS6M in Oakland, CA

This is the best I have received.
Gene W1EEP in Pine Valley UT

The FLAMP exercise was revealing. Fred KI7TPD in UT and Dave AG7TX in NV CONFIRMED in the first pass in PSK-250R (220wpm, 250hz, 80%dc), while losing Bruce KB7VX and Tom WB7TDZ both in WA by the end of the exercise. For the second pass, Doug K7KY used THOR 50×1 (176wpm, 900hz, 80%dc) confirming a total of five stations. Fred KI7TPD relayed the missing blocks using MFSK-32 with success.

Digital Amateur radio is exciting with conditions like these! The bands are ever-changing, presenting different challenges with each net. Thanks for your participation; your focus, observations during the net and for taking the time to forward your evaluation images. We hope to work with you again next Tuesday!

Doug’s 2cents
Don’t forget this change to the weekly FLAMP Exercise: When more than 10 stations check in ACTIVE, we’ll ask a station or two to sit-out the FLAMP exercise. We’ll try to choose stations likely to complete the file. They’ll probably CONFIRM the file and have traffic for the Traffic Round. Stations we ask to pass the exercise will still participate in Traffic and Comments as usual. We’ll put an asterisk by their CALL on the roster. We hope this won’t happen too often. Our objective is to keep overall net time below 1.5hr. We prefer to complete the net in one hour.

Speaking of net-time, recall these lines from our Preamble:

REMAINING CK-INS COME NOW. Participating Ops send ‘CALLSIGN’ or VidID
MONITORING Ops Send,’CALLSIGN in&out’
First time? CALL/NAME/QTH < NCS

Our ck-in routine has multiple objectives. Minimizing input during a busy net activity is Primary. Ck-In is occasionally intense and hectic here at NCS. We need to set the roster correctly, it’s our roadmap for ensuing net operations. Our overall operation is an exercise in parsing and implementing instructions; a learned skill, fundamental to all communications. We appreciate your help in managing the net.
Doug K7KY
